Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, NJ / Red Bank Regional) struck out nine over 7.0 innings while classmate
Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) had three hits and three RBI to lead Manhattan to a 7-2 win over Saint Peter's at Jaroschak Field.
With the victory, the Jaspers pick up their first MAAC series sweep since the 2014 season in improving to 20-28 and 11-10 in the league while the Peacocks fall to 9-39 and 4-17 in the circuit.
Manhattan struck first with two runs in the second inning. Sophomore
Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) and junior
Jason Patnick (Hopewell, NJ / IMG Academy (FL)) each drew one-out walks before swiping second-and-third. Freshman
Anthony Rocchietti (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung Hills) followed with a RBI single to left field to plate Pfenninger before Patnick scored on
Ryan Gronlier's (So., Doral, FL / Doral Academy) run-scoring ground out.
Carrera then continued his big weekend with his first career home run to lead off the third inning while extending the Jasper advantage out to 3-0.
Saint Peter's rallied with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to trim the deficit to 3-2.
The Peacocks then threatened in their next trip to the plate, putting runners on first-and-second with two outs. However, Jacques hunkered down and struck out Rob Moore looking for the third and final out.
Manhattan then put the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the sixth. Pfenninger led off the frame with a double before later coming around to score on a fielding error. Senior
Chris Reynolds (Wall, NJ / St. Rose) followed with a double down the left field line before Carrera delivered a two-run single in pushing the advantage out to 6-2.
Pfenninger would produce another unearned run in the eighth. After reaching on an error, the Garden State native swiped second and then third before scampering home when the throw got past the third baseman.
After threatening in the fifth, Saint Peter's was able to muster just one walk the rest of the way.
Jacques capped his strong outing with a perfect seventh before senior RHP
Michael Scarinci (Nanuet, NY / Pearl River) and freshman RHP
Marc Galvan (Manasquan, NJ / Manasquan) followed suit with perfect innings of relief to close out the three-game sweep.
Jacques (3-4) was outstanding, yielding just two unearned runs on two hits with nine strikeouts over 7.0 dominating frames in collecting his third-straight win.
Carrera once again paced the offense, finishing up 3-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, a stolen base and a walk. For the three-game set, the Miami native hit .600 (9-for-15) with six runs, a double, home run, five RBI and three stolen bases while reaching base at a .647 clip.
Pfenninger also had a big day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, three runs, four stolen bases and two walks while Reynolds finished up 2-for-4 with a double and a run while rounding out hte multi-hit performers for the Jaspers
Manhattan returns to action against Iona on Thursday, May 19 with first pitch slated for 12:00 pm.
