Riverdale, NY - Manhattan dropped a 7-6 decision to Monmouth while falling by just one goal for the second-straight game and the third time this season.
The Jaspers are now 4-7 and 0-2 in the MAAC while the Hawks improve to 7-5 and 3-0 in the league.
Freshman Nikki Prestiano (Cortlandt Manor, NY / Yorktown) was outstanding between the pipes for Manhattan, recording nine saves to go along with four ground balls while limiting one of the most prolific offenses in the MAAC to just seven goals.
The Jaspers also posted a 23-20 advantage in ground balls with freshman Emma Kaishian (Yorktown, NY / Yorktown) notching a team-best five.
Monmouth took the early 2-0 lead before senior Kaitlyn Cunningham (Spring Lake, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) scored off a nifty pass from freshman Molly Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, NY / Lakeland). The Hawks then responded with two-straight in opening up a 4-1 lead with 25:00 to play.
The senior trio of Stefanie Ranagan (Yorktown Heights, NY / Yorktown), Cunningham and Megan Yarusso (Brewster, NY / Brewster) answered with single scores in tying up the game 4-4 with 15:26 to play.
Unfortunately, Monmouth responded with three-straight goals in jumping in front 7-4 with 7:15 remaining.
Down but not out, senior Claire Roediger (Katonah, NY / Somers) found the back of the net off a pass from Yarusso with 3:03 to play. Ranagan then made it a one-goal game off a Roediger pass to trim the Hawk advantage to 7-6 with 48 seconds remaining.
However, Monmouth would win the ensuing draw and run out the clock in escaping Riverdale with the win.
Cunningham and Ranagan each had two goals to lead the way for Manhattan.
Olivia Higson paced the Hawks with two goals while Marial Pierce had a goal and three assists.
The Jaspers are next in action at Canisius on Saturday, April 9 with opening draw slated for 12:00 pm on ESPN3.
