Strano Game-Winner | Highlights
Poughkeepsie, NY – Senior Nick Strano's (Rocky Point, NY / Rocky Point) goal just 21 seconds into overtime lifted Manhattan to a thrilling 11-10 victory over a Marist squad that defeated No. 8 Stony Brook earlier in the week.
Strano's third goal of the contest gave the Jaspers their first MAAC win of the year while avenging last year's 12-goal loss to the Red Foxes.
Manhattan, which also snapped a 10-game MAAC losing streak, improves to 3-10 and 1-3 in the league while defending champion Marist falls to 6-6 and 3-2 in the circuit.
The Jaspers started quickly with goals from junior Alex Abiog and freshman Parker Giarratana (Delray, FL / Boca Raton Community) in assuming a 2-0 lead with 8:11 to play in the opening stanza before the Red Foxes answered with three-straight.
Sophomore Chris Sammarro (Mountain Lakes, NJ / Mountain Lakes) quickly tied it up only to see Marist answer with two more goals.
The never-say-die Jaspers again responded with goals from Giarratana and junior Matt Garvey (Essex Falls, NJ / West Essex) to tie the game up at 5-5 heading into intermission while setting the tone for the game.
After the teams opened the third by trading goals, Giarratana briefly put Manhattan in front at 7-6 with his third goal of the game before Marist made what appeared to be a game-clinching 4-0 run to end the stanza and take a 10-7 lead into the fourth and final quarter.
The fourth quarter was all Jaspers as Strano and Giarratana trimmed the deficit to one with single scores before Strano delivered the equalizer with 6:01 to play in regulation.
Over the final six-plus minutes both teams had opportunities with the last coming when MAAC leading scorer Joseph Radin was denied by sophomore Michael Zingaro (Cortlandt Manor, NY / Walter Panas) with just 10 seconds remaining.
Strano was the hero of the game, scoring three goals after entering the day's action with just one score on the year. Giarratana, meanwhile, had another monster game with four goals to go along with five ground balls.
Giarratana's team-leading 27 goals are tied for the ninth-most in a season in the all-time Jasper annals.
Garvey also had a big game with two goals and three assists while Zingaro registered 10 saves in earning his third victory of the year.
Senior Jack Fowler (Bethesda, MD / St. John's College) also had a monster game in the circle, winning 16-of-24 face-offs.
Five different Red Fox players had two goals while Brian Corrigan made 14 saves.
Manhattan returns to action at Gaelic Park against Siena on Saturday, April 23 with opening face-off slated for 7:00 pm.
