MADEIRA BEACH, FL – The Manhattan College softball team concluded play at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational Presented by HumaneX with matchup against North Florida on Sunday morning. Despite outhitting the Ospreys (2-7), the Jaspers (2-3) were shutout for the second straight game, suffering a 4-0 loss at the Madeira Beach Softball Complex.
After the Jaspers didn't score in the top of the first, North Florida put three runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning. Ashia Kerr drove in a run when she grounded out with the bases loaded, and Ashley Niesman followed with a two-run triple that made it 3-0.
North Florida threatened again in the third, loading the bases with nobody out. However, Stephanie Kristo (San Jose, CA) struck out the side from there to get out of trouble. The Ospreys did add another run on Shelby Duncan's RBI double in the fourth.
Ospreys starter Logan Green, meanwhile, shut down the Manhattan offense. The Jaspers put two runners on with a pair of singles in the second, then again in the fourth and fifth, but Manhattan failed to score each time. Shannon Puthe (Mullica Hill, NJ) roped a one-out single in the top of the seventh before Green retired the next two hitters to finish off the seven-hit shutout.
Seven different Jaspers recorded singles off Green. Kristo (2-1) started in the circle and lasted three innings. She allowed three runs on three hits, struck out six and walked four. Danielle Gabriel (Island Heights, NJ) yielded one run on two hits and registered two strikeouts in two innings of work, while Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) finished up with a hitless inning.
Navia Penrod went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three stolen bases for the Ospreys. Duncan was 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Niesman finished 1-for-3 with that two-run triple. Green (2-3) struck out six and didn't issue a walk in the shutout.
Manhattan will now be off until March 1, when Hartford (0-4) visits Gaelic Park for the home-opening doubleheader. Game one is scheduled to get underway at 2 p.m.
