Poughkeepsie, NY - Sophomore Calvin Crawford (Middletown, NY / St. Thomas More (CT)) scored a career-high matching 20 points while classmate Zane Waterman (Winston-Salem, NC / Fayetteville Academy) notched his second-straight double-double (13 points/12 rebounds) to lead Manhattan to an 81-73 win over Marist at McCann Arena.
With the victory, the Jaspers improve to 11-12 and 8-6 in the MAAC while the Red Foxes fall to 5-19 and 2-13 in the league.
Senior RaShawn Stores (Bronx, NY / Robinson School (NJ)) matched a career-high with 18 points, fueled by 4-of-7 shooting from deep, while Shane Richards (New York, NY / York Prep) matched his classmate with 18 points. The duo also combined to hit all 12 of its free throws while pacing a Manhattan attack that converted 88.5 percent (23-of-26) from the line.
The Jaspers opened the game on a 13-5 run over the first four-plus minutes thanks to four points from Waterman and triples from Richards, Stores and Williams before Marist stopped the bleeding with a Brian Parker layup.
Manhattan's lead would grow to a half-high 11 on a pair of occasions before the Marist fought back with a 14-3 run to tie the game up at 26-26 with 4:45 remaining until halftime.
The final four-plus minutes of the first half resembled a track meet as the teams combined to hit on 11-of-16 from the field, capped by a Stores bank-three with 0.8 seconds remaining that gave the Jaspers a 39-38 halftime advantage.
Manhattan opened the second half with a Crawford layup and a Richards triple while setting the tone for the rest of the game.
The Jaspers advantage would swell to a game-high 12 on a pair of occasions before the pesky Red Foxes clawed to within five on a pair of occasions, the last coming following a pair of Parker free throws with 22 seconds to play.
However, Marist wouldn't get any closer as Manhattan was able to keep the Red Foxes at bay thanks to converting on 13-of-16 (.813) from the line over the final five minutes.
The Jaspers shot a respectable 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the field, including 37.0 percent (10-of-27) from long range, with 16 assists and nine steals.
Marist made good on 42.1 percent (24-of-57), including including 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from deep, while winning the reobunding battle (39-36).
Brian Parker paced four double-figure scorers for the Red Foxes with 19 points.
Manhattan returns to action at MAAC-leading Monmouth on Monday, February 15 at 8:00 pm in a game that will be streamed via ESPN3.
Notes:
* Head Coach Steve Masiello became the fifth coach in school history to reach 90 wins in Riverdale and is now 65-36, all-time, against MAAC opposition and 9-2 vs. Marist.
* Richards' 18 points give him 1,350 for his career, moving into 10th place past former teammate Emmy Andujar.
* Richards also converted on four three pointers and now has 295 for his career and is aiming to become the fifth player in MAAC history to convert on 300.
* Manhattan also improved to 23-10 when Richards cans at least four in a game.
* The Jaspers forced Marist into 17 miscues, marking the 13th time this season they have forced the opposition into at least 16 in a game.
* Manhattan recorded its fifth season split of the season and has now split games with Canisius, Fairfield, Marist, Niagara and Siena.
* Stores matched his career-high of 18 points, which was set earlier in the year against Marist.
* Junior Tyler Wilson (Bronx, NY / Cardinal Hayes) handed out six assists, against no turnovers, in 30 minutes of action.
