LEWISBURG, PA – Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY) notched a career-high 22 points in the Manhattan College women's basketball team's contest at Bucknell on Tuesday night. However, it was not enough for the Jaspers (4-6), as the Bison (8-3) earned a 69-64 victory at Sojka Pavilion.
Bucknell jumped out to an early 13-2 lead and held a 24-8 advantage after the first quarter. The Jaspers stormed back in the second quarter, though, opening the period on a 13-2 run to pull within five, 26-21. However, the Bison responded with a 16-4 spurt to push the margin back to 17 points, 42-25, at halftime.
With Bucknell leading 48-29 midway through the third quarter, a pair of Tatum free throws sparked a 16-6 rally that cut the Jaspers' deficit to nine, 54-45. Julie Høier (Aabyhoej, Denmark) then added a foul shot of her own to make it an eight-point game, 54-46, entering the final period.
Manhattan started the fourth quarter with back-to-back three-pointers by Nyasha Irizarry (Brooklyn, NY) and Tatum to pull within two, 54-52. The Bison countered with nine straight points to extend their cushion to 63-52 before a Kayla Grimme (Altoona, PA) layup started a 10-3 run that brought the Jaspers within four, 66-62, with 2:16 remaining.
It would remain that way until the 33-second mark, when Tatum followed up her own miss for a layup that made it a 66-64 game. After the Jaspers fouled to stop the clock, Bucknell's Kate Walker went 1-for-2 at the line to put the Bison up by three, 67-64, with 19.9 seconds left. Manhattan then took timeout and advanced the ball into the frontcourt. Tatum drove for a layup, but it was off the mark and Bucknell's Kaitlyn Slagus grabbed the rebound. She was immediately fouled, and she sank both free throws to seal a 69-64 win for the Bison.
Tatum had six assists, seven steals and two blocks to go along with her 22 points. Irizarry sank five treys and finished with 18 points, while also tallying three assists. Grimme, meanwhile, recorded 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. The Jaspers shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field, 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from long range, and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) at the charity stripe.
