LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Manhattan College volleyball team looked to carry the momentum of its 3-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson into the resumption of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Saturday, when the Jaspers took on a Rider team that they defeated at Draddy Gymnasium on Sept. 28. This time, however, it was the Broncs that came away with the victory, as Rider (10-11, 4-5 MAAC) posted a 25-15, 25-16, 25-9 victory over Manhattan (6-17, 2-7 MAAC) at Alumni Gymnasium.
After Rider jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the first set, Manhattan went on a 4-0 run to pull within 9-7. However, the Broncs responded with a 10-4 rally that extended their advantage to 19-11. The margin reached 10 points at 23-13, and Rider took the set by a 25-15 count.
There were four early ties in the second set before Rider used an 11-5 spurt to turn a 4-4 deadlock into a 15-9 lead. Manhattan countered with four of the next five points, pulling within three on a Milena Janjusevic (Belgrade, Serbia) kill that made it 16-13. It would get no closer, though, as the Broncs ended the set on a 9-3 run to post a 25-16 win and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, Rider raced out to a 6-1 cushion and never looked back. The Broncs hit .370 (12 kills, two errors, 27 attempts) in the frame en route to a 25-9 win that clinched the 3-0 victory.
Janjusevic smashed a match-high 10 kills to go along with seven digs. Ivana Kostic (Grocka, Serbia) added eight kills and a block, and Zoe Lindsey (McHenry, IL) handed out 22 assists. Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, HI), meanwhile, recorded 15 digs for the Jaspers, who hit just .009 (25-24-116) as a team.
Hailey Riede and Ryan Ackermann led Rider with eight kills apiece. Riede hit .500 and also tallied four blocks, while Ackermann had eight digs. Kaitlyn Griffin ripped seven kills to go along with five blocks, as the Broncs held an 8-2 blocking advantage. Veronica Koval distributed 30 assists, and Emma Aldaya contributed 14 digs. As a team, Rider hit .316 (37-6-98) in the match.
Manhattan's next two matches will both be against Saint Peter's (0-15, 0-8 MAAC). The Jaspers and Peacocks will meet at 1 p.m. on Sunday in Jersey City, then play again in Riverdale at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
