Niagara University, NY - Justin Satchell tip-in with 1.2 seconds left lifted Niagara to a 55-53 win over Manhattan at the Gallagher Center.
Senior RaShawn Stores (Bronx, NY / Robinson School (NJ)) banked in a three at the buzzer but the shot was ruled to have been released with no time on the clock.
The Purple Eagles improve to 5-12 and 3-3 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 6-9 and 3-3 in the league.
Manhattan jumped out to the early 7-4 lead, highlighted by this Samson Akilo (Lagos, Nigeria / Nazareth (NY)) three-point play before Niagara ripped off eight-straight points in taking a 12-7 lead with 15:43 to play in the first half.
Junior Tyler Wilson (Bronx, NY / Cardinal Hayes) immediately answered with this layup before finding sophomore Calvin Crawford (Middletown, NY / St. Thomas More (CT)) for this layup.
After the Purple Eagles responded with a pair of buckets, senior Shane Richards (New York, NY / York Prep) hit this jumper and this three pointer while kick-starting a 12-4 run that saw Stores reclaim the lead with this triple as the Jaspers took a 23-20 lead with 3:54 to play in the opening stanza.
Thanks to its big push, Manhattan ended the half by making good on 7-of-9 from the floor in taking a 29-28 lead at intermission.
In the second half the lead would swell to five on four occasions as the Jaspers led 42-37 with 12:15 to play following a Crawford tip-in.
Niagara would then embark on a game-changing 14-1 run over the next four-plus minutes in jumping in front 51-43 with 7:43 to play.
In what would prove to be a back-and-forth contest, Manhattan responded with eight-straight points to tie the game up at 51-51 with 3:29 to play.
After Emile Blackman hit a pair from the line, Richards tied it up with this layup while making it a 53-53 game with 1:21 remaining.
After both teams missed opportunities to take the lead, Satchell tipped in Blackman's errant shot to provide the final 55-53 score.
Richards led the Jaspers in scoring for the ninth time this season, finishing with 12 points while Williams and sophomore Zane Waterman (Winston-Salem, NC / Fayetteville Academy) each had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds to round out the double-figure scores. Wilson again facilitated the offense to the tune of a game-high seven assists, against just two runovers.
Marvin Prochet led Niagara with 12 points while Matt Scott had 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Despite being outrebounded 46-27, the Jaspers forced 16 turnovers while limiting the Purple Eagles into just 35.6 percent (21-of-59) shooting, including 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from long range.
Manhattan will host Canisius on Friday, January 15 with opening tip slated for 7:00 pm.
