PEORIA, Ill. – In its second match of the CEFCU Classic, the Manhattan College volleyball team (5-2) dropped a 25-22, 25-16, 25-17 decision to Weber State (3-3) at Bradley University's Renaissance Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.
After Weber State jumped out to a 4-1 cushion in the first set, Manhattan rallied to tie it at 6-6. With the score knotted at 10-10, the Wildcats went on a 6-1 rally to open up a 16-11 advantage. The Jaspers responded, though, scoring six of the next seven points and evening the set at 17-17 on a Milena Janjusevic (Belgrade, Serbia) kill. Weber State claimed the next three points to regain the lead, 20-17, but Manhattan again countered, forcing a 20-20 deadlock on a block by Jade Gray (Boise, Idaho) and Ivana Kostic (Grocka, Serbia). However, the Wildcats rattled off the next three points to go back in front, and Weber State held on for a 25-22 set win.
The Wildcats again took an early lead in the second set, using a 3-0 rally to turn a 3-3 deadlock into a 6-3 advantage. It was still a three-point difference at 13-10 when Weber State went on a 7-0 run to extend the margin to 10 points, 20-10. After two straight Manhattan points, Weber State claimed three in a row to make it 23-12. The Wildcats made just one hitting error in the set, posting a .364 percentage (13 kills, 33 attempts) in the 25-16 win that gave them a 2-0 lead in the match.
There were nine early ties in the third set, as neither side was able to build an advantage greater than two points before Weber State went on a 4-0 run to take a 14-10 lead. After the Wildcats extended the margin to seven points at 21-14, the Jaspers cut it to five when a Marissa Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) kill made it 22-17. Manhattan would get no closer, though, and Weber State finished off a straight-sets victory with a 25-17 triumph in the third frame.
Behrens hit .429 for the Jaspers, slamming seven kills and committing just one error in 14 swings. She also recorded four blocks. Janjusevic, meanwhile, finished with seven kills and a match-high 16 digs. Gray tallied 17 kills to go along with six digs and two blocks, while Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii) contributed seven assists and seven digs, as the Jaspers outdug the Wildcats 47-38. Manhattan was held to .071 (30-23-98) hitting as a team.
Tournament MVP Megan Thompson had 12 kills on .550 hitting and completed a double-double with 11 blocks. Taylor Christensen recorded 32 assists and eight blocks, as the Wildcats outblocked the Jaspers 15-5. Thamires Cavalcanti paced Weber State with 14 digs. As a team, the Wildcats hit .260 (36-9-104) in the match.
Manhattan concludes the tournament with a 7 p.m. ET matchup against host Bradley (4-1). The contest will be shown live on ESPN3.
