LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's soccer squad dropped its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener to Siena, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Siena Turf Field.
With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 0-5-1 on the season, and 0-1 in conference play. The Saints move to 2-5-2 overall, including 1-0 in the MAAC.
Two first half goals by Siena proved to be enough, as the Saints maintained a clean sheet en route to posting the side's first conference win of the fall.
The two Siena strikes came just 12 minutes apart and both goals came within the opening 20 minutes of play.
In the 7th minute, Siena junior David Itoafa managed to link up with senior Tom Allen to open the scoring. Itoafa played a long ball over the top and Allen was able to beat the Jaspers' defense and delicately finish inside the far post to put the Saints up 1-0.
In the 19th minute, Siena doubled its advantage when sophomore Alexander Tejera headed one in off a corner from Allen.
Siena sophomore goalkeeper Gianni Carillo made seven saves in the match, including a superb stop on Manhattan junior Niels Kirch's (Zülpich, Germany / Franken-Gymnasium) penalty kick in the waning minutes of play, to preserve the shutout.
Despite not finding goal, the Jaspers outshot the Saints 14-10 overall, and held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.
Senior Alex Shackley (Las Vegas, Nev. / Palo Verde) led Manhattan with two shots on target.
The Jaspers return to action when they play their MAAC home opener against Fairfield on Wednesday, Sept. 30. The opening kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
