LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena swept a twinbill from Manhattan by scores of 6-2 and 5-4 at the Siena Baseball Field.

The Saints improved to 11-19 and 5-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) while the Jaspers fall to 9-25 and 5-9 in the league.

Game 1
Fueled by a three-run fifth, Siena took the first game by a 6-2 score.

The Saints opened the scoring on a two-out, two-run Dave Esquerra single in the bottom of the first.

Manhattan would rally to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third. Freshman Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, N.J. / Flemington) led off with a single before moving to third on senior Chris Kalousdian's (Fort Salonga, N.Y. / Kings Park) one-out single. Sophomore Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, N.Y. / Haldane) plated Pfenninger with a sacrifice bunt while moving Kalousdian to second. Senior Joe McClennan (Highlands, N.Y. / Cornwall Central) then picked up Kalousdian with a two-out, run-scoring single while drawing the Jaspers even at 2-2.

Justin Esquerra immediately reclaimed the lead for Siena with a one-out home run in the bottom of the frame.

Manhattan then appeared poised to again tie the game in the top of the forth. Freshman Brendan Bisset (New City, N.Y. / Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)) led off with a single before moving to second on a wild pitch. Bisset then advanced to third on senior Mikey Miranda's (Miami, Fla. / Florida Christian) bunt single. Unfortunately, Bisset would be thrown out at the plate on a failed safety squeeze while keeping the deficit at 3-2.

Siena added to lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, extending the lead to 6-2.

In the top of the sixth, Manhattan saw the first two batters reach safely while forcing the Saint to the bullpen. Unfortunately, RHP Matt Quintana easily got the next three outs while keeping the runners at bay.

That would prove to be the final Jasper threat of the game as Quintana yielded just a one-out, Miranda single over his final three innings of work.

Forlow and Pfenninger each notched two hits to pace a 10-hit Manhattan attack that saw eight of the nine regulars reach base safely.

Senior RHP Scott McClennan (Highlands, N.Y. / Cornwall Central) fell to 2-6 in defeat, yielding five runs on seven hits over 4.1 innings.

RHP Ed Lewicki (3-3) struck out one and yielded two runs on nine hits over 5.0 innings in notching the win while Quintana earned his third save with 4.0 innings of one-hit ball.

Game 2
Siena scored three runs in the bottom of the first before holding off a late Manhattan charge in posting a 5-4 victory.

The Saints plated three runs in their first trip to the plate while batting around but the damage could have been worse as the Jaspers left the bases loaded.

In the top of the second, Manhattan got one of those runs back on a Bisset RBI single that plated senior Vin Teixeira (Hamden, Conn. / Hamden Hall Country Day).

Siena immediately answered in the bottom of the frame with a Dan Swain home run before adding to the lead when Brian Fay scampered home on a fourth-inning wild pitch, extending the lead out to 5-1.

The never-say-die Jaspers fought back with three runs in the top of the sixth. Joe McClennan was plunked leading off the frame. He would then come around to score on a Kalousdian RBI triple to right field that also chased RHP Bryan Goosens from the game. Teixeira then greeted LHP Kyano Cummings with a two-run homer to left field while trimming the deficit to 5-4.

Unfortunately, that would be it for Manhattan as Cummings recovered to pick close out the win, yielding one run on two hits with three strikeouts in notching his fifth save of the season

Teixeira led the way going 2-for-2 with his first home run of the year, two runs and two RBI. Kalousdian and Forlow each added two hits for a Jasper unit that rapped out 10 in the game.

Sophomore RHP Joey Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J. / Watchung Hills) fell to 1-6 on the year, allowing three runs on four hits in an inning of work.

Goosens (2-5) earned the win, striking out four while yielding three runs on seven hits and a walk over 5.0 innings.

The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a single game starting at 12 p.m.
