Jaspers Surge Past Delaware State, 16-5

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Courtesy of a 4-0 run to open the game and a 7-0 spurt to conclude the match, the Manhattan women's lacrosse team, led by head coach Elizabeth Weber, earned a 16-5 win over Delaware State at Gaelic Park on Saturday evening.

With the win, the Jaspers improve to 3-11 overall, while the Hornets fall to 1-13.

Junior co-captain Megan Yarusso (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) had a game-high five goals in the contest. Senior Domenica O'Brey (Loudonville, N.Y. / Colonie Central) tied Yarusso with an afternoon-high in points, with five, as O'Brey netted four times and added an assist.

Junior co-captain Kaitlyn Cunningham (Spring Lake, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic), sophomore Darby Nolan (Oakridge, N.J. / Jefferson Township), Yarusso and junior Stefanie Ranagan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) scored in the opening minutes to provide Manhattan with an early edge.

After Hornets' sophomore Emily Etkins scored on a free position to halt the Jaspers' run, Yarusso and O'Brey scored to put Manhattan up 6-1 with 10:14 to play in the first half. After two more Delaware State goals, to make the score 6-3, O'Brey and Yarusso each tallied in the waning minutes of the opening stanza to provide the Jaspers with an 8-3 advantage at the half.

Manhattan outscored the Hornets 8-2 in the second half to put the game well out of reach. The Jaspers lengthy spurt over the final 20 minutes of the game included goals by Yarusso, freshman Kara Hodapp (Oakridge, N.J. / Jefferson Township), Cunningham, O'Brey, Ranagan and freshman Maddie Regal (Ellicott City, Md. / Howard).

Freshmen Molly Flores (Chevy Chase, Md. / St. John's College) and Melissa Vogelgesang (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown West) each collected an assist in the contest, representing each player's first career collegiate point.

Defensively, Yarusso paced Manhattan with five ground balls. Cunningham led all players with three caused turnovers. Senior starting goalkeeper and co-captain Christina Fiorinelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) recorded six saves en route to earning her third win of the year.

 

The Jaspers return to action on Wednesday, April 15, when they host Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Iona for a 3 p.m. bout at Gaelic Park.
