WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - In a game that was saturated with nine combined errors, Monmouth defeated Manhattan 5-4 in 13 innings on a Grant Lamberton bases-loaded walk.

With Dean Ehehalt's 600th career win, the Hawks improve to 4-11 and 1-0 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) while the Jaspers fall to 5-15 and 2-2 in the league.

Both teams struggled offensively going a combined 5–for-37 (.135) with runners on base, including 4–for-25 (.120) with runners in scoring position, with just two of the runs being earned, albeit via walks.

Manhattan started quickly with a first-inning run as sophomore Jose Carrera (Miami, Fla. / St. Brendan) led off with a walk before stealing second. Carrera then took third while stealing on an errant throw to the bag.

Monmouth got that run back in the first on a RBI ground out before the Jaspers immediately reclaimed the lead when senior Chris Kalousdian (Kings Park , N.Y. / Kings Park) led off the second with a double before coming in to score.

The Hawks would take their first lead of the game with two more unearned runs in the bottom of the third while going in front by a 3-2 score.

Both pitchers settled down nicely after some rough starts over the first few frames with Monmouth's Chris McKenna retiring 17 straight before junior Chris Reynolds (Wall, N.J. / St. Rose) delivered a two-out single in the eighth.

Sophomore RHP Joey Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J. / Watchung Hills) meanwhile allowed just one earned run over 7.1 innings while striking out five, against just one walk.

The Hawks extended its lead out to 4-2 on a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth before the Jaspers rallied to tie the game up at 4-4 in its last trip to the plate.

Senior Mikey Miranda (Miami, Fla. / Florida Christian) was plunked leading off the ninth while forcing McKenna from the game. Reliever Justin Andrews then got what appeared to be a double-play grounder, only to see the ball booted as pinch-runner Jason Patnick (Hopewell, N.J. / Hopewell Valley Central) advanced to second safely. Patnick and fellow pinch-runner Adam Genners (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) moved up to second-and-third on a Kalousdian sacrifice bunt. Patnick came around to score on an Evan Brown (So., Ashburnham, Mass. / Bridgton Academy (Maine)) RBI ground out while trimming the deficit to 4-3. Senior Joe McClennan (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall Central) followed with a two-out game-tying single on the first pitch he saw while tying the score at 4-4.

In the bottom part of the frame, the Hawks appeared poised to win in walk-off fashion before some impressive defense by Manahttan sent the game to extra innings. With two outs, Kyle Perry broke for home on an errant pitch only to be see Reynolds, who moved to catcher in the ninth, corral the ball and fire it to Matt Simonetti (So., Manalapan, N.J. / Manalapan) for the final out. Simonetti blocked the plate before applying a sweep tag on Perry, who was unable to reach home plate safely.

In extras, Andrews allowed just one hit over the next three innings while Simonetti retired all nine batters he faced while setting the stage for a dramatic 13th inning.

With one out in the top part of the frame, junior Christian Santisteban (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) smoked a single through the left side. After moving to second on a two-out walk, Kalousdian lined a ball to left field that was hauled in on Dan Shea's diving snare while saving at least one run.

Cary Jacobson opened the bottom of the inning with a double down the right-field line that just stayed fair. Shea followed with an infield single that pushed Jacobson to third. Following a pitching change, Dave Moreno was walked intentionally to set up a force at any base before Lamberton's aforementioned game-winning free pass.

Reynolds and McClennan each had a pair of hits to pace a six-hit Jasper attack

Simonetti (0-1) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, yielding just one run on four hits with two strikeouts over 4.2 innings of relief.

For Monmouth, Jacobson went 3-for-6 with two runs and a RBI while Shaine Hughes and Shea each notched two hits to round out the multi-hit performers for the day.

Mike Brambilla (1-0) pitched a scoreless inning in earning the win.

The teams will conclude the series with a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, March 29 as both games will be streamed live on ESPN3.
