BRONX, N.Y. - Mike Wallace fired a complete game two-hit shutout in lifting Fairfield to a 2-0 victory over Manhattan in the series finale between the teams.
Despite the loss, the Jaspers claimed the series and are 5-13 and 2-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) while the Stags are 2-11 and 1-2 in the league.
Senior RHP Scott McClennan (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall Central) was outstanding in defeat, striking out five over 6.2 innings. He allowed just two runs on eighth hits in falling to 2-3 on the year.
In a classic pitcher's duel that spawned a one hour and 55 minute contest, Fairfield plated the game's only two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Troy Scocca opened the scoring with a two-out infield single that ricocheted off of McClennan's glove while scoring Jake Salpietro. Sal Ciccone followed with a run-scoring single of his own to plate Brendan Tracy.
Manhattan, meanwhile, had just four runners in the game as sophomore Jose Carrera (Miami, Fla. / St. Brendan) and junior Christian Santisteban (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) each singled and drew a walk.
Wallace faced just one over the minimum in his final six innings of work and helped his cause by snaring a liner before starting a 1-6-3 double play in the top of the seventh after Santisteban led off with a walk.
The Jaspers threatened one last time in the ninth as Carrera reached via a one-out walk before stealing second and taking third on a wild pitch. However, Wallace would keep him at bay while recording the final two outs of the game in securing his first win of the year.
McClennan saw his scoreless steak snapped at 18.2 innings but continues to lead Manhattan in wins (2), strikeouts (21) and ERA (2.86).
Sebastian Salvo was the only player to record multiple hits on the day and led an eight-hit Stag attack, finishing up 2-for-4.
The Jaspers will next be in action at Hofstra on Tuesday, March 24 at 3:30 p.m.
