SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Manhattan College softball team concluded play at the Santa Clara Marriott Round Robin with a matchup against the host Broncos on Sunday afternoon. Manhattan (8-7) posted a 2-0, extra-inning win when the teams met on Friday, but this time it was Santa Clara that came out on top, as the Broncos (10-21) notched a 10-0 victory at the Santa Clara Softball Field.
Elena Bowman (San Mateo, Calif.) singled in the top of the first, but that would prove to be one of just two Manhattan hits in the game. The only other Jasper to reach base was Sydney Weedon (North Tustin, Calif.), who had a one-out base hit in the fifth.
Santa Clara, meanwhile, scored in every inning. The Broncos plated one in the bottom of the first, then put up a four-spot in the second. The big blows in the inning were a two-run single by Breezy Bernard, followed by Geenamarie Bonilla's RBI single. Santa Clara increased its lead to 8-0 with three runs in the third before adding two more in the fourth.
Kimberly Goulart finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored for the Broncos, while Ellie Fisher went 3-for-4 with three runs. Bernard and Bonilla both ended up 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the contest, while Casandra Padillia scored twice. Broncos pitcher McCall James (1-4) tossed a two-hit shutout to earn her first collegiate win. James struck out four and didn't issue a walk.
Amy Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) (5-4), who saw her streak of 15 consecutive scoreless inning snapped, took the loss for the Jaspers. She gave up five runs on four hits, struck out one and walked two in 1.2 innings. Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, N.Y.) tossed 2.1 innings of relief and allowed five runs on eight hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Manhattan has one non-conference doubleheader remaining before beginning its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule against Siena on Saturday. The Jaspers visit Wagner (4-8) for a 3 p.m. twinbill on Wednesday.
