Women's Lacrosse Manhattan Athletic Department

UMBC Upends Manhattan, 12-11

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Manhattan women's lacrosse team fell to UMBC, 12-11, at UMBC Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 2-4. The Retrievers improve to 5-3.

The meeting was a true game of runs, as the Jaspers went on a 6-0 spurt in the middle of the first half to take a 9-2 lead, their largest of the game. UMBC experienced two separate 5-0 runs, one to climb back into the game over the latter stages of the first half, and then again to conclude the game and earn the 12-11 win.

With Manhattan leading 3-2 just 12 minutes into the first half, the Jaspers struck quickly for six goals over a seven-minute span. Freshman Kara Hodapp (Oak Ridge, N.J. / Jefferson Township) started the run with a goal at the 17:32 mark. Goals by junior Claire Roediger (Katonah, N.Y. / Somers), senior Donna Jo DiNorcia (Verona, N.J. / Verona) and junior captain Megan Yarusso (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) before two more goals from Hodapp, opened up a seven-goal lead for Manhattan at 9-2.

UMBC answered with a 5-0 spurt over the final 10:46 of the opening stanza to bring the game to within two at 9-7, at the intermission.

Manhattan scored the first two goals of the second half to extend its lead to 11-7, but the Retrievers fought back to score five unanswered over the final 18:06 to come away with with the narrow 12-11 victory.

Roediger led the Jaspers with a five-point (3G, 2A) afternoon. Hodapp also had a hat trick in the game, while junior captain Kaitlyn Cunningham (Spring Lake, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic) recorded two goals. Junior Stefanie Ranagan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) also scored once.

Defensively, Cunningham and senior starting goalkeeper and captain Christina Fiorinelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) shared the team lead with three ground balls apiece. Fiorinelli also registered ten saves.

Junior defender Casey Silvestri (Pomona, N.Y. / Albertus Magnus) caused a team-high two turnovers.

The Jaspers return to action on Wednesday, March 18, when they welcome Central Connecticut State to Gaelic Park for a 4 p.m. meeting.
