STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's lacrosse team fell to Stony Brook, 19-3, in its opening contest of the season on Saturday afternoon.
The Seawolves outscored the Jaspers 8-0 in the second half to ensure an opening day victory. Junior attacker Brody Eastwood, who led the team in scoring in 2014, picked up three of his four goals in the second half. Junior midfielder Jake Sichenzia and sophomore midfielder Alex Corpolongo added two goals apiece in the second half, all of which came in the fourth quarter.
The Seawolves used two separate 4-0 runs, one in the first quarter and one in the second, to take a 10-2 lead over the Jaspers with just over four minutes remaining in the first half. Junior midfielder Jimmy Rogers (Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha) halted the latter run with his second goal of the game to make the score 10-3. Stony Brook answered back with a goal in the waning seconds of the half to make it 11-3 after 30 minutes of play.
Seawolves' senior midfielder Mike Rooney opened the scoring on the afternoon, netting the first two goals of the game. Junior midfielder Challen Rogers followed with two scores of his own to put Stony Brook up 4-0 before Manhattan freshman Andrew Gresham (Pitt Meadows, BC, Canada / Pitt Meadows Secondary) got the Jaspers on the board.
Corpolongo, Eastwood and Rogers led Stony Brook with four goals each. Rogers tallied a game-high six points (4G, 2A) in the outing.
Rogers paved the way for Manhattan with two goals.
The Jaspers return to action on Saturday, February 14, when they travel to New Jersey to take on Princeton, as the team concludes its season opening two-game road swing. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
