BAY LAKE, Fla. - Senior co-captain Alex Shackley (Las Vegas, Nev. / Palo Verde) netted the biggest goal of his Manhattan career, scoring in the 90th minute to propel the Jaspers to a 1-0 victory over Saint Peter's in the opening round of the 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, Manhattan advances to take on the top-seeded Monmouth Hawks in the quarterfinal round of the championships on Friday at 2:15 p.m. With the loss, Saint Peter's concludes its season with a 7-9-2 record overall, and a 4-6-2 mark in MAAC play.
With extra time looming in the waning stages of the match, the Jaspers won a corner with approximately 20 seconds to play. The Peacocks handled the set piece and cleared the ball with about ten seconds remaining in regulation. Freshman full back Dahrius Waldron (Manchester, England / Loreto) swung a long ball into the traffic in the Saint Peter's box. After the ball redirected off a couple of players in the box, it fell to Shackley, who muscled it into goal just before time expired. The tally marks the captain's fifth of the season. Waldron was credited with an assist.
The two sides played to a relatively even opening 45 minutes, however, the Jaspers came out of the halftime break with a more attacking mindset and managed to take ten shots in the second stanza. For the match, Manhattan outshot Saint Peter's 19-9.
Freshman goalkeeper R.J. Noll (Yelm, Wash. / Yelm) made one save in the outing en route to earning his third clean sheet of the campaign.
The Jaspers will have a quick turnaround, as the squad will take on the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Monmouth, at 2:15 p.m. on Friday. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
