RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Following a game-winning goal by Monmouth in the 108th minute of the second period of extra time, the Manhattan men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest to Monmouth in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action at Gaelic Park on Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Jaspers move to 2-9-1 overall, including 2-5 against league opponents. Monmouth improves to a conference best 10-3-3, and remains unbeaten in MAAC play, at 6-0-2.
Manhattan sophomore Troy Carrington (Verona, N.J. / Syracuse) opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, when he made a fantastic 30-yard run up the middle of the field into a dangerous attacking area. He bypassed two defenders en route to sliding his effort to the left of Hawks' junior goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky and inside the right post to put the Jaspers up 1-0.
In the 78th minute, Monmouth equalized following a goal off a set piece. Hawks' senior David Acuna Camacho delivered an in swinging corner from the left flag that senior John Egan was able to head goalward to knot the score at one.
With the two sides playing to a stalemate in the opening ten minutes of extra time, a second period was necessary to decide the outcome. Monmouth found the game-winner in the 108th minute to stay undefeated in MAAC play. Hawks' freshman Anderson Asiedu crossed a ball from the right goal line area that sophomore Andrew Gee chested in from about one yard out to end the match.
Freshman goalkeeper R.J. Noll (Yelm, Wash. / Yelm) recorded five saves in the outing.
The contest marks the third time Manhattan has dropped a game this season in the final period of extra time.
The Jaspers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 24, when the squad hosts Marist for a 2 p.m. match on Senior Day at Gaelic Park. Prior to the meeting, the six Manhattan seniors: Brandon Alvarado (Wyckoff, N.J. / Ramapo), Abraham Bartoah (New Haven, Conn. / Monroe), Josh Binfield (Essex, England / Williamsville East), Robert Maffei (McLean, Va. / McLean), Alex Recinos (Norwalk, Conn. / Brien McMahon) and co-captain Alex Shackley (Las Vegas, Nev. / Palo Verde), will be recognized for their hard work and commitment to the program.
