BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – On Friday afternoon, the Manhattan College volleyball team suffered its first loss of the 2014 season.  The Jaspers (4-1) dropped a 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 decision to Hofstra (6-1) at St. Francis Brooklyn's Genovesi Center on the first day of the Terrier Invitational.

In the first set, the Jaspers built an early 5-1 lead.  However, after a Teodora Peric (Chicago, Ill.) kill put Manhattan up 11-5, the Pride scored seven of the next 10 points to pull within two, 14-12.  The Jaspers pushed their advantage back to three at 19-16 before Hofstra responded with a 5-1 run to go in front 21-20.  Manhattan tied the score at 21-21 on a Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.), but Hofstra scored the final four points of the set to capture a 25-21 win and take a 1-0 lead in the match.  The Pride hit a scorching .414 (14 kills, two errors, 29 attempts) in the set.

Hofstra continued its momentum into the second set, scoring six of the first seven points.  After the Pride opened up an eight-point cushion at 13-5, the Jaspers claimed three of the next four points to pull within 14-8.  However, Hofstra immediately countered with a 3-0 run of its own to make it 17-8.  The Pride's lead reached nine points at 21-12 before Manhattan began a comeback effort.  The Jaspers cut their deficit to six at 22-16, then Hofstra won the next two points to move within one of taking the set.  The Pride needed three opportunities, though, as Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii) had a kill and a service ace during a 3-0 rally, before finally closing out the set, 25-19.  Hofstra's offense was just as efficient in the second set, hitting .312 (15-5-32).

The Jaspers got out to an early advantage in the third set, opening up a 6-2 lead.  However, after a Volovski kill made it 10-6 in favor of Manhattan, Hofstra rallied for five straight points to go ahead.  Despite the margin never reaching more than three points, the Jaspers were unable to even the score, as the Pride took the set, 25-22, to close out a 3-0 match win.

McGuinness had a double-double for the Jaspers, notching team-highs with 14 kills (on .500 hitting) and 10 digs.  Claire Van Dyk (New Richmond, Wis.) finished with nine kills and seven digs, while Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii) contributed nine digs.  Peric handed out 31 assists for Manhattan, which hit .218 (36-14-101) as a team.

Kelsie Wills collected 12 kills, nine digs and three blocks for Hofstra.  Emily Burke tallied 10 kills, while Brianna Montgomery had seven kills, nine digs and three blocks.  Adama Aja added seven kills on .636 hitting, and Nuria Lopes da Silva hit .429 with seven kills and four digs.  Hannah Klemm, meanwhile, recorded 37 assists, 10 digs and four blocks for the Pride.  Hofstra outdug Manhattan 43-38 and had a 9-3 advantage in blocks.  As a team, the Pride hit .275 (43-15-102).

Manhattan is back in action with a pair of matches on Saturday.  The Jaspers take on NJIT (3-2) at 9 a.m., then meet host St. Francis Brooklyn (1-5) at 4 p.m.
