STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook scored three runs in the first inning and seven times in the second inning on its way to a 16-4 victory over Manhattan on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
Stony Brook scored three runs on four hits in the first inning, then loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning. By the time the inning was over, Stony Brook scored seven times to take a 10-0 lead after two innings.
Trailing 12-0 in the fifth, the Jaspers got on the board. Elias Monsalve singled to start the inning and moved to third base when Evan Brown drilled a double to left field. Two batters later, Jose Carrera delivered a sacrifice fly to plate Monsalve with Manhattan's first run.
Stony Brook got that run back in its half of the fifth inning and scored twice more in the sixth to move ahead, 15-1.
In the seventh, Carrera stroked a run-scoring double to plate Evan Brown, who led off the inning with a walk. Chris Kalousdian followed with a run-scoring groundout to bring home Chris Reynolds, who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame. Jason Patnick finished the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Carrera, making it a 15-4 game.
Stony Brook pushed across a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Italiano, that scored Johnny Caputo, who had doubled with one out.
Toby Handley was 3-for-3 for the Seawolves and Casey Baker was 2-for-3 with four runs scored. Carrera drove in a pair of runs for the Jaspers and scored once.
Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, April 12 at noon when the Jaspers will begin a three-game series with Monmouth at Van Cortlandt Park.
