RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan rallied from an early 9-0 deficit but was unable to complete its comeback, dropping a 10-6 contest to Iona on Sunday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park.

Iona got the benefit of three unearned runs and scored four times in the first two innings to take a 4-0 lead over the Jaspers. The Gaels broke the game open with five runs in the third inning, started on a solo home run by Carmine Palummo that made it 5-0. In the end, Iona scored five runs on four hits to lead 9-0 after the top of the third.

Meanwhile, Iona starter Bill Maier held the Jaspers hitless over the first 4 1/3 innings. Joe McClennan broke through with Manhattan's first base hit on a well-struck double down the left field line. The Jaspers eventually loaded the bases with one out in the fifth for Jose Carrera, who took an 0-2 pitch the other way into left field for a two-run single.

Trailing 10-2 in the sixth, the Jaspers got a run across to make it 10-3 and had the bases loaded with one out. Maier beared down to get the final two outs, but the Jaspers made it 10-5 in the eighth on solo home runs by Brendan Slattery and Vin Teixeira that each cleared the left field wall.

Max Bruckner came on in relief to get the final two outs in the eighth inning, but allowed a leadoff double to Jose Carrera to begin the ninth. Andrew Gorecki's RBI groundout scored Carrera but Bruckner got three ground ball outs in the ninth to close out the victory for Iona.

Carrera went 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game, while Slattery also had two hits in four at-bats.

The Jaspers return to action on Wednesday, April 9 at Stony Brook for a 3 p.m. contest.
