RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Jaspers fell to the Fairfield Stags, 12-6, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game at Gaelic Park on Saturday night. With the loss, Manhattan falls to 2-9 overall, and 0-3 in conference play.
Fairfield used a 5-1 run over the latter stages of the first half to take a 7-2 lead at the break. Jenna Slowey, who had a game-high six points (4G, 2A), capped off the spurt with a man-up goal with 1:48 to play in the opening 30-minute period.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Cunningham netted the first goal of the second half to bring the Jaspers to within four at 7-3. Fairfield would go on to score the next four goals to make it 11-3, effectively putting the game out of reach. Melanie Raso also tallied four goals on the evening for the Stags, two of which came on that run.
Raso and starting goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras shared the team lead in ground balls, corralling four each for Fairfield.
For the Jaspers, junior Donna Jo DiNorcia and sophomore Megan Yarusso led the team, notching two goals apiece. The aforementioned Cunningham and junior Carly Cappello scored once each.
Junior Alex Rousseau led the defensive front, collecting a team-high four ground balls. She also caused two turnovers, which led the team. Junior starting goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli recorded 11 saves in the contest.
Manhattan returns to action on Wednesday, April 9, when the team hosts the Monmouth Hawks in MAAC play on Friends of Jaclyn night. The opening draw is set for 8 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
