RIVERDALE, N.Y. – On Saturday afternoon, the Manhattan College softball team took a break from Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) competition by welcoming Patriot League leader Lehigh to Gaelic Park for a doubleheader. The Jaspers (18-24) notched a come-from-behind 3-2 victory in the opener before the Mountain Hawks (25-18) earned a split with a 7-1 game two win.
Lehigh took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one when Emily Bausher ripped an RBI single and Vicky Lattanzio followed with a double. Bausher scored on the play, but Lattanzio was thrown out trying to advance to third, ending the inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Amanda Paxson (Cedar Grove, N.J.) roped a leadoff single to center field and Jenn Vazquez (Fairfield, Conn.) with a shot to right that was just shy of the fence, bouncing over for a ground-rule double. Andi Stallard (Katy, Texas) was up next, and she delivered a deep fly ball to left. Paxson scored easily, cutting the Mountain Hawks' advantage to 2-1.
Manhattan then tied it with another tally in the fifth. Emily Cutler (Bloomingdale, N.J.) drew a one-out walk and scored on Elena Bowman's (San Mateo, Calif.) double to center. Stallard started the winning rally with a one-out double to right center in the bottom of the sixth. After Amy Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) grounded out, Mickayla Romero (Las Vegas, Nev.) dropped an RBI single into right. Danielle Gabriel (Island Heights, N.J.) then retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, as the Jaspers notched a 3-2 victory.
Vazquez went 2-for-3 in game one, while Stallard was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Romero and Bowen each ended up 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Paxson had the only other Manhattan hit to go with a run scored. Gabriel (2-4) got the start in the circle and went the distance. She allowed two runs on six hits, struck out three and walked four.
Lattanzio reached base all three times she came up, finishing 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. In addition to going 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, Bausher (10-6) tossed a complete game in the circle. She surrendered three runs on six hits, struck out four and walked two.
The Mountain Hawks got on the board first again in game two, as Lattanzio ripped a leadoff single in the second and scored on Bausher's triple. However, the Jaspers responded immediately on Romero's long home run to straightaway center.
It remained 1-1 until the fourth, when Lehigh scored twice. After a leadoff walk, Lattanzio doubled to give the Mountain Hawks the lead. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Bausher's groundout. Lehigh then extended its lead with a four-spot in the sixth. The big blow in the inning was a two-run double by Emma Capetz, which was followed by an unearned run that made it 7-1.
Starting pitcher Ashley Quigley, meanwhile, limited Manhattan to just three hits after the Romero home run. She allowed a two-out single to Vazquez in the sixth before sending the Jaspers down in order in the seventh, giving Lehigh a split of the twinbill.
Five different Jaspers had hits in game two, with Vazquez and Stallard recording doubles to go along with Romero's homer. Bright (7-13) took the loss after pitching the first four innings. She gave up three runs on three hits, struck out four (including striking out the side in the first) and walked one. Making her first relief appearance of the year, Kate Bowen (Newtown, Conn.) surrendered four runs (three earned) on three hits and walked three in an inning-plus, while Erin Hamm (Collegeville, Pa.) went the final two innings. She was charged with three hits and picked up a strikeout.
For the Mountain Hawks, who belted out nine hits in the contest, Bausher ended up 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs. Lattanzio finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Cassie Waggy went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Capetz drove in a pair of runs. Quigley (7-5) yielded one run and five hits, struck out four and didn't walk a batter in a complete-game effort.
The Jaspers (7-7 MAAC), who are currently tied for fifth in the MAAC standings, resume conference play on Sunday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Saint Peter's (10-36, 4-10 MAAC). The Peacocks were swept by first-place Fairfield in a twinbill on Saturday.
