RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Manhattan scored four runs on five hits with two outs in the eighth inning and three pitchers combined to produce the Jaspers' second straight shutout in a 5-0 win over Hofstra on Wednesday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park.

Junior Chris Kalousdian started off the eighth inning two-out rally with an infield single to third base. Freshman Jason Patnick followed with a single through the left side to set the stage for cleanup man, sophomore Christian Santisteban. Santisteban flicked an 0-2 pitch over the outer half of the plate to left center field, scoring Kalousdian and moving Patnick to second on the play. This gave the Jaspers a 2-0 lead. Freshman Evan Brown kept the rally alive with a single to right center field, allowing Patnick to reach home safely to put the Jaspers up 3-0. Brown's hit also moved Santisteban to second, and knocked Hofstra starter Alec Eisenberg out of the game after 102 pitches.

Brett Schreiber came on in relief and threw a wild pitch, moving Santisteban to third and and Brown to second during junior Joe McClennan's at bat. McClennan took advantage of the RBI situation by singling to score Santisteban and move Brown up a bag to third. Brown scored on a Schreiber balk during junior Vin Teixeira's at bat to put Manhattan up 5-0, which ended up being the final.

The only other run of the game was scored in the bottom of the fourth, when Teixeira hit an RBI single to left center, scoring Patnick and giving Manhattan a 1-0 lead.

Two, three, four in the Manhattan order...Kalousdian, Patnick and Santisteban each recorded two hits in the game to lead the team. Every player from one through eight in the Jaspers order picked up at least one hit on the afternoon.

The Jaspers pitching staff strung together a great performance, starting with freshman Shawn Kanwisher. Kanwisher didn't have overpowering stuff, but got guys out. The freshman gave up no runs on five hits and one walk over five innings of work. Even when he allowed the leadoff batter to reach in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth, he was able to focus and retire the side, unscathed.

Sophomore southpaw Casey Meyers entered the game in relief to start the sixth inning. Meyers was brilliant, allowing just one hit and no walks over three innings. He also struck out two.

Freshman Matt Simonetti pitched the ninth inning and gave up just one hit to ensure the shutout remained intact.

Kanwisher (1-1) earned his first win of the season. Eisenberg (1-3) took the loss for Hofstra. He went seven and two-thirds innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits. He hit two batters and struck out five.

The Jaspers return to action tomorrow, Thursday, April 17, to take on the Marist Red Foxes in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
