HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - Hofstra scored six times on six base hits in the first inning on its way to an 8-2 victory over Manhattan on a cool spring afternoon.
Hofstra struck first, as its first four batters reached base to open up a 1-0 advantage. The big blow of the inning came off the bat of Rob Cafiero, whose bases-clearing triple gave the Pride a 4-0 lead. An RBI groundout by Mike Friel made it 5-0 and TJ Ehrsam's run-scoring snigle capped the six-run frame.
Manhattan got splendid relief work from Casey Meyers (three innings, one hit allowed) to hold Hofstra at bay. The Jaspers got a run back in the fifth when Chris Kalousdian led off with a single to left field and stole second base. Two batters later, Evan Brown drove in Kalousdian with a single to make it 6-1.
Trailing 7-1 in the seventh inning, Brown again brought home Kalousdian. This time, Brown pulled a double down the right field line for his second RBI of the game. Manhattan had runners at second and third with one out, but Hofstra's Brett Schreiber was able to limit the damage, stranding the runners in scoring position and stifling the Jaspers' best chance to rally.
Chris Kalousdian, Joe McClennan and Evan Brown each collected two base hits for the Jaspers, who return to action on Wednesday, April 2 agains Fordham at Van Cortlandt Park at 3:30 p.m.
