RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Jaspers fell 14-7 to the Wagner Seahawks on Wednesday evening in Staten Island.
Wagner scored the first four goals of the second frame to extend their 6-4 lead at halftime to a 10-4 advantage by the middle of the second half. Stephanie Peterson led all scorers with five goals in the contest for the Seahawks. Two of Peterson's five tallies came on that 4-0 run to open the second stanza.
In the first half, the Jaspers slid into an early 3-0 deficit but clawed their way back before halftime. Kaitlyn Cunningham, Megan Yarusso and Stefanie Ranagan scored even strength goals. Domenica O'Brey notched a man-up goal on a free position attempt near the end of the half to cut the lead to 6-4 at the break.
Ranagan scored her second goal of the game amidst an 8-1 Seahwaks run in the second half. Manhattan scored the final two goals of the game courtesy of Kelsey Rehain and Darby Nolan, but the Jaspers ran out of time in their comeback effort.
Starting goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli was outstanding once again as she recorded 15 saves and a 53.5 save percentage in the game.
Following the contest, head coach Elizabeth Weber said, "We need to make smarter decisions all over the field...along with capitalizing on opportunities. We are still continuing to get better with each game."
Manhattan will return home for a meeting with the Saint Joseph's Hawks on Saturday afternoon. The opening draw is slated for 1 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
