BUFFALO, N.Y. - Manhattan collected 12 base hits but Canisius used a seven-run second inning to gain an early lead on its way to a 10-6 victory over the Jaspers Monday afternoon in the series finale between the two teams.
Manhattan got on the board during the second at-bat of the game, when Jose Carrera flashed his dazzling speed. Carrera drew a leadoff walk on a full count then promptly stole second base and advanced to third when the catcher's throw sailed into center field. Carrera then dashed home on an ensuing wild pitch to give the Jaspers a 1-0 lead.
Jason Patnick and Andrew Gorecki singled in consecutive at-bats to start the frame. Two batters later, Brendan Slattery drove a sacrifice fly to score Patnick, making it a 2-0 game.
Jaspers' starter Michael Martin held Canisius scoreless in the first inning, but the Griffs capitalized on an error to start the second inning to score seven times in the frame. Connor Panas and Jesse Puscheck each hit two-run home runs during the inning to give Canisius a 7-2 lead.
Trailing 9-2 to start the seventh inning, Jason Patnick tripled with one out and scored on Gorecki's RBI single, making it 9-3. Christian Santisteban ripped his ninth double of the season to plate Gorecki with the second run of the inning, bringing the Jaspers to within 9-4.
Canisius got one more run in the seventh to lead 10-4. In the top half of the eighth, Patnick continued his strong day with an RBI double to score Chris Reynolds, who led off with a single.
Trailing 10-5 in the ninth, the Jaspers got their first two men aboard when Santisteban was hit by a pitch and Slattery singled. Chris Kalousdian scored Santisteban on a groundout to make it 10-6 but Canisius reliever Eric Stolzenburg was able to shut the door from there to give the Griffs the win.
Patnick finished a home run short of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Gorecki, Slattery and Kalousdian each finished the day with two base hits and a run batted in.
Manhattan returns to action on Tuesday, April 1 at Hofstra for a 3 p.m. matchup.
