RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Michael Martin tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout in support of Manhattan's 14-hit outburst as the Jaspers defeated Quinnipiac 9-0 in the final game of a three-game weekend series at Van Cortlandt Park.
Martin received 11 ground ball outs during the game, none bigger than a 6-4-3 double play with the bases loaded that ended the second inning, stopping Quinnipiac's only true threat of the game.
In the next half inning, the Jaspers went ahead 4-0 with the big blow coming off the bat of Christian Santisteban. With the bases juiced and nobody out, Santisteban found himself down 0-2 in the count, then worked his way back to 3-2. On the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Santisteban went the other way into the left center field gap to score all three runs and give the Jaspers a 3-0 advantage. After a Brendan Slattery single put runners on the corners, Chris Kalousdian dropped down a beautiful squeeze bunt to score Santisteban with the fourth run of the frame.
In the fifth, Kalousdian doubled home Santisteban, who ripped his second double of the game with one out. Leading 5-0 in the sixth, the Jaspers hung up three more to go ahead 8-0 on Jose Carrera's RBI double and a two-run single by Joe McClennan past a drawn-in infield.
Mikey Miranda's RBI double in the seventh scored Kalousdian with the ninth run of the game, giving Martin plenty of cushion to finish off his first career complete-game shutout.
Carrera (3-for-6, two runs scored), Santisteban (3-for-4, three RBI), McClennan (2-for-5, two RBI), Kalousdian (2-for-4, two RBI) and Miranda (2-for-4, RBI) all had multiple-hit games for the Jaspers.
Manhattan is back in action on Saturday, March 29 at noon in a doubleheader at Canisius in Buffalo, N.Y.
