Low Scoring Second Half Leaves Men's Lacrosse Short of Stony Brook

Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Jaspers came out on the wrong side of a 12-8 game with the Stony Brook Seawolves on Tuesday night. The game saw 15 goals scored over the first two quarters and just five in the second half. With the loss, Manhattan falls to 1-7 on the season.

With the score 8-7 Stony Brook at the half, the Seawolves scored the first three goals of the third quarter over the first 9:55 of play to take an 11-7 lead. Neither team would score over the next 17:15. Senior midfielder Brett Madarasz would break the drought with 2:50 to play in the fourth quarter and bring the Jaspers to within three, but Stony Brook got the goal right back 1:18 later to make the score 12-8 with little time remaining.

The Jaspers leapt out to a very early 2-0 lead courtesy of goals by seniors Pat Hodapp and Sean McMahon. Hodapp was tied with two Stony Brook attackers for a game-high four goals apiece. Seawolves' attacker Brody Eastwood entered the game with 21 goals in his first seven games of the season and added four more Tuesday night for an even 25 on the year.

Sophomore Nick Strano netted the other two Manhattan scores in the meeting, both of which came in the first half.

Defensively, Manhattan was led by McMahon, who collected a team-high five ground balls. Senior starting goalkeeper Rich Akapnitis also played well, making 13 saves against a potent Seawolves offense.

Despite the loss, head coach Steve Manitta was pleased with his team's persistence. "I witnessed effort tonight that I've yet to see this season," Manitta said after the game.

The Jaspers did a nice job getting out of their own end all night long as they successfully cleared the ball 13 times in 15 opportunities. Manhattan lost the ground ball battle by a wide margin, 47-27. The Jaspers also had a difficult time at the faceoff X, winning 5-21 draws on the evening.

Manhattan will have an 11-day break before returning to action on Saturday, March 29, when they face the Marist Red Foxes in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) contest. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
