SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Michael Martin and Joe Jacques held the Seton Hall offense at bay for eight innings but the Pirates were able to score the winning run with two outs in the ninth to defeat the Jaspers, 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
In his first start of the season, freshman Jason Patnick belted his first career home run. Martin allowed two runs on five hits in his second straight strong start, while Jacques fanned six batters in 3 2/3 innings of work.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Jose Carrera led off the frame by driving a double down the left field line. Chris Kalousdian hit behind Carrera, advancing him to third with a groundout to second base. Carrera then strolled home on a run-scoring single by Brendan Slattery that made it a 1-1 game.
With two outs in the fifth, Patnick worked a tremendous at-bat, seeing nine pitches and fouling off three straight on a 3-2 count. He then cracked the 10th pitch he saw over the left field fence for a solo home run, his first collegiate home run, putting the Jaspers ahead 2-1.
Seton Hall tied it in the fifth against Martin, who gave way to Jacques in the sixth inning. Jacques surrendered his first base hit with one out in the eighth, but retired the last two batters to keep the game tied at 2-2.
Kalousdian led off the Jaspers' half of the ninth with a single to center. He promptly stole second base. After Sam Burum got the first out of the inning on a ground ball, Dan Ditusa came on to retire the next two men and strand Kalousdian at second.
Jacques got two quick outs in the ninth before pinch-hitter Jackson Martin drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. After a hit batter, D.J. Ruhlman dropped a single into right center to score Martin with the winning run.
Michael Martin did not walk a batter in five innings and struck out three. Jacques allowed just one run and two hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Slattery went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Manhattan.
The Jaspers and Pirates will wrap up the three-game set on Sunday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
