RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's soccer team fell to Iona 3-1 in the squad's season finale at Gaelic Park on Wednesday night. Prior to the match, the Jaspers honored the six seniors on their roster: Reese Akers, Tommy Amos, Eugene Heerschap, Andrew Santos, Jake Scavetta and Sean Towey.
Iona scored a goal just seven minutes into the match to grab an early 1-0 lead. Freshman forward Marcos Nunez found an opening in front of the net and saw his initial effort saved by Manhattan sophomore goalkeeper Alex Coates McDowall. The ball ricocheted back in front off a Jaspers defender and went behind Coates McDowall. Nunez, continuing his run after his first attempt was saved, saw the ball land by his feet while standing between the goal line and Coates McDowall. All Nunez had to do was pass the ball into goal to make it 1-0.
The Gaels struck again just before the halftime horn sounded, when the conference's leading scorer, Ignacio Maganto, received a ball about 8 yards from goal from the right side, and completed a successful scissor kick, netting inside the near corner to open up a 2-0 Iona advantage. Sophomore Teddy Forson was credited with an assist on the play.
Less than 3 minutes into the second half, the Gaels went ahead ahead 3-0. The team earned a corner kick that Maganto hooked into the box near the far post. Sophomore defender Jordan Scarlett headed the ball inside far post to provide Iona with a major edge.
The lone Jaspers goal of the contest came in the 74th minute, when Heerschap received a ball from Amos from about 12 yards out, turned and blasted it past Iona sophomore goalkeeper Julian Petrello. The goal marked Heerschap's third of the fall and second in two games. Amos' assist was his fourth of the season.
With the loss, Manhattan concludes the year with a 2-13-2 record, including 1-8-1 in conference play.
