NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Despite strong individual performances by many competitors, the Manhattan men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Iona in a dual meet on Saturday afternoon. The men's team dropped a very close 146-134 decision, while the women were defeated 176-96.
With the loss, the men's side falls to 4-3 on the season, while the women drop to 3-3 on the year.
Men
Junior Lance Neuendorf, senior Mike Mackay, junior Dallan Treanor and sophomore Rich Llewellyn led off the men's squad with a first place finish in the 200 medley relay, posting a time of 1:38.11.
Mackay and freshman Neil Perry were named Manhattan Men's Swimmers of the Meet.
Mackay enjoyed three first place finishes on the afternoon (two individual and one team). The senior clocked a 59.17 in the 100 breaststroke, earning the victory by almost 3.5 seconds. Mackay also swam to a top finish in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a 2:11.60.
Perry took first place in the 50- and 100 freestyle events, as well as in the 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay. The freshman's time of 21.57 in the 50 freestyle earned him the win by almost one half second. In the 100 freestyle, Perry swam to a 48.41, narrowly defeating Iona sophomore Keegan Boisson-Yates.
The Jaspers earned an impressive sweep in the 100 butterfly, as Perry, Treanor and Llewellyn finished first, second and third, respectively. Perry's 53.21 edged his teammate Treanor by .29 seconds. In the 400 freestyle relay, Treanor, sophomore Christopher Reyes, senior Ryan Klages and Perry earned a win of 3.39 seconds.
Neuendorf had an exceptional meet, finishing first in the 200 backstroke, eclipsing the 2:00 mark with a 1:59.77. The junior also finished first in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:59.57.
Women
Sophomore Madison Brown and freshman Alexandra Hutzler were tabbed Manhattan Women's Swimmers of the Meet by the coaching staff.
Brown came from behind in the 200 backstroke event to earn a top finish, clocking in at 2:14.34, just .02 seconds ahead of her closest opponent. She also swam the opening leg of the first place 400 freestyle relay team consisting of sophomore Sara Buckley, freshman Eileen Blood and sophomore Patricia Colton.
Hutzler had the most impressive meet of any Manhattan swimmer, winning two events and breaking four school records. The freshman swam to a 1:08.99 in the 100 breaststroke, taking the top time by over one half second. Her 50- split time of 32.62 saw her snap two school marks in the event. In the 200 breaststroke, she clocked a 2:30.21 to earn the win by 5.02 seconds and take down a school record. She also broke the school best in the 200 individual medley, racing to a 2:13.71.
The Manhattan men's swimming and diving team will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 6 p.m. The women's swimming and diving team will next compete on Friday, Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m.
