RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's soccer team dropped a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) match, 1-0, to Saint Peter's in damp conditions at Gaelic Park on Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Jaspers move to 1-11-2 overall and 0-7-1 in league play. The Peacocks improve to 4-12-0, including 2-6-0 against MAAC opponents.
The lone goal of the match came late in the first half, in the 43rd minute, when Saint Peter's won a corner kick. Left footed sophomore midfielder Luke Fairlamb hooked an in swingning ball into the box that was not handled by either side. After the Jaspers allowed the ball to bounce once, their clearing attempt failed and landed near Peacocks' sophomore defender Reece Lambert. Lambert tucked the ball inside the post to Manhattan sophomore goalkeeper Alex Coates McDowall's left, making the score 1-0 Saint Peter's.
Neither side would score in the second half.
Manhattan's best opportunity came in the 13th minute, when senior forward Eugene Heerschap received a ball near the top of the 18-yard box. Heerschap spun and blasted an attempt that would have found the upper 90, but Peacocks' senior goalkeeper David Giddings managed to get his fingers to it, forcing the ball over goal and out for a Manhattan corner.
Despite having some opportunities in dangerous areas, especially off set pieces, the Jaspers could not convert.
Coates McDowall made seven saves in the match for Manhattan.
The officials displayed a very strict interpretation, issuing eight yellow cards in the contest (four to each side).
The Jaspers will next play on Saturday, Nov. 1, when the squad travels to upstate New York to take on Niagara. The opening kickoff has been moved from 2 p.m. to noon at Niagara University. Manhattan will conclude its season Wednesday, Nov. 5, when the team hosts Iona for a 7 p.m. meeting on Senior Night. The ceremony recognizing the senior players for their hard work and dedication to the program will be held prior to the match.
