Second-Half Surge Lifts Rider To 3-1 Win Over Manhattan

Box Score

Box Score

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Carissa Sanchez notched two second-half goals to lift Rider to a 3-1 win over visiting Manhattan at Ben Cohen Field in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action.

With victory, the Broncs improve to 9-4-1 and 4-2-1 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 6-7-2 and 1-4-2 in the league.

In the opening stanza, sophomore Tara Teal (Delmar, N.Y. / Bethlehem) delivered the first major scoring opportunity of the game when her shot in the 18th minute hit off the crossbar. The teams would then trade opportunities until Rider's Ellie Smith knocked in the first goal of the match off a pass from Sanchez in the 45th minute.

It would take Manhattan all of 35 seconds to answer the Broncs' strike as sophomore Lizzy Carlson (Auburn, Mass. / Auburn) converted a Carly Perry (Fr., Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City) pass with just 25 seconds until halftime to tie things up.

Unfortunately for the Jaspers, the second half was all Riders as Sanchez, the reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week, found the back of the net twice in just over six minutes to give the Broncs what would prove to be an insurmountable 3-1 advantage in the game's 58th minute.

Freshman Becca Vitale (Branford, Conn. / Brandford) made eight saves in goal while Carlson scored her first goal of the season to lead the way for Manhattan.

The Jaspers return to action with their final regular season home match against Quinnipiac on Wednesday, Oct. 22 with opening kickoff slated for 7 p.m.

Prior to squaring off with the Bobcats, seniors Kaelyn Angelo (Oak Ridge, Tenn. / Oak Ridge), Shannon Garrity (Massapequa Park, N.Y. / Massapequa), Aislinn McIlvenny (Pleasant Valley, N.Y. / Arlington) and Daniella Morgante (Amawalk, N.Y. / Somers) will be honored for their service to the program.
