RIVERDALE, N.Y. – After opening Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with two wins, the Manhattan College women's basketball team has now dropped two straight conference tilts. The Jaspers (3-10, 2-2 MAAC) suffered an 82-58 defeat against Siena (6-6, 1-2 MAAC) at Draddy Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
There were a number of scoring runs in a closely-contested first half that featured nine ties and eight lead changes. The Jaspers had an early 4-2 lead before Siena went on a 9-2 run to open up a 13-6 advantage at the 14:32 mark of the first half. Manhattan came storming back, though, getting a layup from Shayna Ericksen (Long Valley, N.J.) and a three-pointer from Monica Roeder (Marlton, N.J.) before an Ericken free throw tied the game at 15-15 with 11:41 left in the half. The Jaspers then went in front, 20-19, on a three-point play by Ashley Stec (Cazenovia, N.Y.) midway through the period.
Siena responded with seven straight points to again create a six-point cushion, 26-20, but Manhattan again countered. Layups by Maeve Parahus (Congers, N.Y.), Ericksen and Blake Underhill (Edgewater, N.J.) knotted the score at 26-26, then Underhill hit two free throws to put the Jaspers in front 28-26 with 4:41 left before halftime.
The back-and-forth play continued, as Siena went up 34-32 on an Ida Krogh three-pointer at the 2:02 mark before Ericksen hit a layup on the other end to tie the score once more. However, a Tehresa Coles bucket gave the lead back to Siena, and the Saints ended the half on a 6-1 rally to take a 40-35 advantage into the locker room.
The Jaspers tied the score one more time on Underhill's layup that made it 44-44 early in the second half before Siena responded with a 7-0 rally to take the lead for good. Manhattan got within four, 51-47, on a Parahus three-pointer with 12:39 left, but the Saints would gradually build on their advantage from there. Siena outscored Manhattan 31-11 over the final 12:39 of the contest to pull away for a 24-point, 82-58, triumph.
“What we did in the first half, unfortunately, we didn't execute in the second half,” Head Coach John Olenowski said. “We need to go back to the drawing board and do whatever we can to get better.”
Ericksen finished one rebound shy of a double-double for Manhattan, notching 17 points and nine boards. Roeder added 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while Underhill tallied 11 points and four assists. The Jaspers shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) from the field, but were held to just 20 percent (3-of-15) shooting from three-point range and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) at the free throw line.
Megan Donohue and Coles each had a double-double for Siena. Donohue recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Coles tallied 14 points and 14 boards to go along with five assists and three steals. Clara Sole Anglada just missed a double-double of her own, collecting 13 points and nine rebounds. Brianna Logan notched nine points and six assists off the bench, and Emia Willingham also finished with nine points. The Saints shot 42 percent (29-of-69) from the floor and outrebounded the Jaspers 56-30, including a 24-7 edge on the offensive glass. Siena went 4-for-20 (20 percent) from long range and 20-for-31 (64.5 percent) at the charity stripe.
Manhattan is home for the fifth time in six games on Thursday, when Fairfield (8-5, 3-1 MAAC) comes to Draddy Gymnasium. It will be the Jaspers' annual “Kid's Day Out” contest, with a special start time of 11 a.m.
