WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Manhattan College women's basketball team made a furious rally from 12 points down to pull within five with 16 seconds left at Monmouth on Sunday afternoon. However, the Jaspers (4-15, 3-7 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) ran out of time, allowing the Hawks (5-16, 4-6 MAAC) to hold on for a 75-70 victory at the Multipurpose Activity Center.
Monmouth led 15-12 with 12:51 left in the first half before the Jaspers went on an 11-2 run to take a 23-17 advantage at the 8:08 mark. The margin reached nine points when an Allison Skrec (Roselle, N.J.) layup made it 28-19 with 5:38 to go in the half. However, the Hawks ended the half on a 15-2 spurt, putting them in front, 34-30, at the break.
After the Hawks extended the margin to seven points, 44-37, with 13:57 remaining, Manhattan quickly rallied back. Monica Roeder (Marlton, N.J.) drained a three-pointer, then Skrec converted an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the Jaspers' deficit to one, 44-43, at the 13:05 mark. Monmouth responded with an 11-0 rally, though, to bring its lead back to 12 points, 55-43.
The margin reached a game-high 13 points at 61-48 with 6:02 to go, and Monmouth still led by 12, 73-61, with 1:33 left. However, an Ashley Stec (Cazenovia, N.Y.) three-point play, followed by a steal and layup from Blake Underhill (Edgewater, N.J.) that made it a seven-point game, 73-66, with 1:00 remaining. Sara English hit a layup on the other end to bring Monmouth's lead back to nine points before Roeder drained a jumper with 19 seconds left. Nicole Anderson (Hamden, Conn.) then stole the inbounds pass and was fouled. She sank both free throws to cut the margin to five, 75-70, with 16 seconds to play, but the Jaspers ultimately ran out of time.
Roeder notched a game-high 20 points, while also posting a team-leading five rebounds and three steals. Skrec had her first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high-tying 10 assists, and Stec contributed 10 points, four boards and three assists. Making her first collegiate start, Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J.) matched her career-best with eight points, including a pair of treys. Shayna Ericksen (Long Valley, N.J.) also had eight points for the Jaspers, who shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the field as a team. Monmouth also boasted a 44-27 advantage on the glass.
