JERSEY CITY, N.J. - After a two-week layoff, the Jaspers traveled to Saint Peter's to take on the Peacocks in their final Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) swimming meet of the 2013-2014 season. It was a tough night in the pool for Manhattan as the men were defeated 158-71 and the women fell 160-53.
The Manhattan women began the night with the 200 medley relay. Manhattan Women's Performer of the Meet, freshman Madison Brown, swam a 30.46 first leg to help the Jaspers get off the a good start, but Manhattan took third in the event. Brown also enjoyed second place finishes in the 100 fly and 200 freestyle relay.
A couple of other noteworthy times for the women's side include a 12:09.89 finish in the 1000 freestyle for Molly Russell and a 1:08.71 mark in the 100 backstroke for Michaela Schatz. Each score was good enough for a third place finish.
As a whole, the men fared a bit better than the women, but no Manhattan swimmer managed a first place finish in any event throughout the meet.
Mike Mackay was one of Manhattan's top finishers at the meet, collecting two second place times. He swam a 2:05.71 in the 200 individual medley and a 1:00.40 in the 100 breaststroke.
P.J. Sweeney finished with a 10:30.02 in the 1000 freestyle, a time that earned him second place in the event.
Manhattan Men's Performer of the Meet, freshman Richard Llewellyn, earned two third place finishes by swimming to a 1:52.36 in the 200 freestyle and a 54.96 in the 100 fly.
Junior Ryan Klages also swam well with a third place finish in the 50 freestyle following a 23.23 time. He earned the same result in the 100 freestyle when he clocked in at 51.58.
Following the meet, head coach Walter Olsewski said, "They [Manhattan] tried as hard as they could, but they just didn't have it tonight."
The Jaspers are not scheduled to swim competitively until Wednesday, February 12, when the MAAC Championships commence in Buffalo, N.Y.
