KINGSTON, R.I. - Manhattan freshman Erica Modena continued her stellar weekend, scoring for the second time in as many matches, but Rhode Island's Samantha Leyh tallied two goals and an assist to push the Rams past the Jaspers 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Leyh was URI's catalyst from start to finish, scoring her first goal just four minutes into the match. Leyh took a feed from Lucy Gildein and deflected one past Jasper goalkeeper Maria Sanzari to get the Rams on the board.
Four minutes later, Modena caused a turnover in the backfield and scored an unassisted goal in nearly the same way that she scored in the second half against Columbia on Friday night.
Both teams continued an attacking style of play as the half continued. URI had two shots hit the post in the first half and finally went back in front in the 40th minute. Again it was Leyh, whose unassisted tally put the Rams ahead 2-1.
The Rams carried their one-goal lead throughout the second half, but the Jaspers had a chance to tie. Sam Washuk's blast in the 72nd minute clanged off the crossbar and the Jaspers barely missed the equalizer.
URI scored its insurance goal with five minutes left, when Gildein scored after a feed from Leyh to cap the scoring and improve its record to 3-3.
Sanzari made nine saves in her second straight start in goal, while URI keeper Katie Nickles had six saves.
The Jaspers carry a 2-4 mark into their next match at Wagner in Staten Island, N.Y. on Saturday, September 14 at 1 p.m.
NOTES:
Today's match was the first Manhattan match that had been decided by more than one goal ... after missing most of the second half and overtime due to an injury suffered Friday vs. Columbia, Janie Schlauder started on Sunday and fired off two shots on goal ... Leyh has scored four goals this season for Rhode Island.
