FAIRFIELD, Conn. – On Saturday, the Manhattan College volleyball team concluded action at the Sacred Heart Invitational with a pair of matches. The Jaspers (4-3) took the first set against American (5-0) before ultimately falling, 24-26, 25-21, 25-13, 25-14. Manhattan then suffered a five-set, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 15-10 loss to the host Pioneers (4-2) at the Pitt Center.
The first set against American was a back-and-forth affair. The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Manhattan rallied to tie it at 4-4, only to see American go back in front 10-7. However, Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii) slammed a kill on the next play to start a 9-3 rally that gave the Jaspers a 16-12 advantage. American responded, though, scoring seven of the next eight points to regain the lead, 19-17. Manhattan scored the next three points to go up 20-17, and the Jaspers reached set point after a McGuinness kill made it 24-23. American knotted the score at 24-24, but Manhattan held on to take the frame by a 26-24 count.
The second set started off tight, and Manhattan used a 4-0 spurt to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 10-8 lead. However, American countered with a 16-7 run, reaching set point on Monika Smidova's service ace that made it 24-17. The Jaspers fought off four set points before the Eagles finally closed it out, 25-21.
American controlled the third set from the start. The Eagles scored the first four points of the set before Manhattan pulled within 4-3. With American leading 10-8, the Eagles went on a 5-1 run to increase their cushion to 15-9. The Jaspers scored three of the next four points to make it 16-12, but American responded with a 7-0 rally and eventually took the set, 25-13.
The Eagles carried their momentum into the fourth set, scoring seven straight points after Manhattan clinched the first point of the set. American maintained that comfortable advantage throughout the set, as the Jaspers would get no closer than six points the rest of the way. The Eagles notched a 25-14 set win to finish off a 3-1 victory.
McGuinness paced the Jaspers with 18 kills to go along with 13 digs. Ellie Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) also had a double-double, notching 12 kills and 11 digs. Jade Gray (Boise, Idaho) handed out 36 assists and added nine digs, while Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii) tallied a match-high 23 digs. Sarah Haselhorst (Naperville, Ill.) added 10 digs for the Jaspers. As a team, Manhattan hit .160 (45 kills, 20 errors, 156 attempts) in the match.
For the Eagles, Kelly McCaddin registered 14 kills on .571 hitting and also posted six blocks. Morgan Hendrix and Juliana Crum added 12 kills apiece, while Smidova had 49 assists and 14 digs and Allison Cappellino just missed a double-double with nine kills and 18 digs. Megan Rosburg tallied 20 digs and had six service aces, as American held a 9-1 edge in that department. The Eagles also outdug the Jaspers 75-68 and held a 13-5 advantage in blocks. American hit .271 (65-20-166) as a team.
In the Sacred Heart match, the first set was a set of runs. Sacred Heart took early leads of 3-0 and 5-2, but Manhattan stormed back to go in front 11-8. After the Pioneers tied the score at 12-12, the Jaspers went on a 4-1 rally to go up 16-13. Sacred Heart responded with four straight points to regain the lead before the Jaspers got back-to-back aces from Yamashiro to take a 22-19 advantage. Manhattan never trailed after that and took the set by a 25-23 count.
Manhattan scored the first two points of the second set, but Sacred Heart responded with a 5-0 run to take the lead. The Jaspers pulled back within two at 13-11 before the Pioneers countered with a 4-2 spurt that gave them a four-point, 17-13, cushion. After Manhattan again got within two at 19-17, Sacred Heart scored six of the final eight points to capture a 25-19 set win. The Pioneers hit .419 (17-4-31) in the set.
The Jaspers raced out to a 6-1 lead in the third set. However, Sacred Heart then went on a 19-6 run to take a 20-12 advantage. Manhattan rallied for six of the next seven points to trim its deficit to three, 21-18, before the Pioneers scored three straight points to reach set point. Sacred Heart won the set 25-19 to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
After a back-and-forth start to the fourth set, Manhattan used a 12-4 run to turn a 6-5 deficit into a 17-10 lead. Sacred Heart took the next three points to pull within four, 17-13, but the Jaspers quickly extended their margin back to seven at 23-17. A Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) kill brought Manhattan to set point, and a kill by Juliana Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished off the 25-20 set win.
There were six ties and three lead changes in the fifth set. Sacred Heart went up 4-2 before the Jaspers used a 4-1 run to take a 6-5 lead. However, the Pioneers countered with four of the next five points, opening up a 10-7 advantage after consecutive aces by Alissa Young. Kiki Robinson served two more aces, Sacred Heart's ninth and 10th of the match, to seal a 15-10 set win and give the Pioneers a 3-2 victory.
McGuinness led the Jaspers with 13 kills and added eight digs, while Wiekamp notched her second double-double of the day with 12 kills and 10 digs. Volovski finished with 11 kills and Anna Kitlar (Kiel, Germany) registered six blocks. Teodora Peric (Chicago, Ill.) handed out 19 assists and Gray recorded 15 assists. Yamashiro tallied a match-high 22 digs. The Jaspers recorded 10 total blocks and hit .148 (48-25-155) as a team.
Dianas Mercado hit .348 for Sacred Heart, slamming 20 kills and adding 21 digs. Sarah Krufka tallied 16 kills, while Robinson notched a double-double with 45 assists and 12 digs. Ana Gonzalez had 19 digs for the Pioneers, who outdug the Jaspers 73-67. As a team, Sacred Heart posted a .185 (62-29-178) hitting percentage in the match.
The Jaspers return to action next weekend at the Big Green Invitational in Hanover, N.H. Manhattan will play four matches in the two-day event, starting with a 10 a.m. contest against Providence (4-3) on Friday. The Jaspers will also face host Dartmouth (2-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
