JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Manhattan College volleyball team made the short trip to Saint Peter's for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) matchup on Wednesday night. Using a balanced team effort where four players had at least six kills and the squad hit a combined .259 (34 kills, 13 errors, 81 attempts), as the Jaspers (8-7, 2-1 MAAC) notched a 25-17, 25-19, 25-22 victory over the Peacocks (3-12, 1-2 MAAC) at the Yanitelli Center.
Saint Peter's took an early 5-3 lead in the first set before Manhattan went on a 12-3 run to open up a 15-8 advantage. The Peacocks scored nine of the next 13 points to get back within two, 19-17, but would pull no closer. Manhattan took the final six points to seal a 25-17 set win.
After Manhattan went up 8-4 in the second set, Saint Peter's responded with a 9-3 spurt to take a 13-11 lead. However, the Jaspers countered with an 8-1 run, going up 19-14 on a kill by Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.). A kill by Anna Kitlar (Kiel, Germany) brought Manhattan to set point at 24-18, and Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii) then pounded a kill to wrap up the set, 25-19. The Jaspers hit a solid .414 (15-3-29) as a team in the set.
The third set started off tight until the Jaspers used a 5-1 rally to turn a 6-6 deadlock into an 11-7 cushion. Saint Peter's battled back to tie the score at 17-17 before the Jaspers claimed the next two points to regain their advantage, 19-17. After the Peacocks tied it again at 19-19, Manhattan went on a 5-2 run to reach match point. On the Jaspers' second opportunity, McGuinness slammed a kill to finish off a 25-22 set win that gave Manhattan a 3-0 match victory.
Kitlar, McGuinness and Volovski paced the Jaspers with eight kills apiece. Volovski didn't commit an attack error in the match, hitting a spectacular .533. Kitlar added two service aces and hit .429, while McGuinness hit .333 and tallied seven digs. Ellie Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) notched a match-high nine digs to go along with six kills, and Teodora Peric (Chicago, Ill.) posted 25 assists and seven digs. Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii) also tallied seven digs, as Manhattan outdug Saint Peter's 41-28.
Laura Reinhart led the Peacocks with nine kills and added six digs. Lauren Behrens contributed eight kills, two aces and three blocks, while Meredith Przybocki notched four blocks. Kristina Baehr handed out 24 digs to go along with six digs, and Jennifer Pliska tallied a team-high eight digs. Saint Peter's hit .102 (28-18-98) as a team.
The Jaspers return to action with their first home conference matches this weekend. Manhattan hosts defending MAAC champion Fairfield (3-9, 1-1 MAAC) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, then welcomes league newcomer Quinnipiac (2-11, 0-1 MAAC) to Draddy Gymnasium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
