WORCESTER, Mass. – The Manhattan College volleyball team concluded action at the Holy Cross/UMass Lowell Tournament with a pair of matches on Saturday.  The Jaspers (2-1) picked up a 32-30, 25-21, 25-20 victory over Stony Brook (2-1) before dropping a 24-26, 25-13, 25-21, 25-21 decision to the host Crusaders (1-2) at the Holy Cross Field House.

The first set against Stony Brook was a back-and-forth struggle that featured 21 ties and 10 lead changes, and neither side was able to build an advantage of more than two points.  Manhattan took a 20-19 lead on a service ace by Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii), but the Seawolves scored the next three points to go up 22-20.  Stony Brook was the first to reach set point at 24-23 before Ellie Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) slammed a kill to even the score.  After the teams traded multiple set points apiece, the Jaspers finally converted on their third opportunity when Katelyn Nugent (Auburn, Wash.) put away a kill to wrap up a 32-30 win.

Each team went on a 3-0 run early in the second set before Manhattan used a 5-1 rally to turn a 3-3 deadlock into a 9-4 lead.  Stony Brook got back within three at 19-16, but the Jaspers responded with three straight points to push the margin back to six, 22-16.  After the Seawolves once again cut Manhattan's lead to three points at 22-19, Anna Kitlar (Kiel, Germany) slammed a kill, then teamed with Juliana Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) on a block that brought the Jaspers to set point.  Manhattan took a 2-0 lead in the match with the 25-21 set win.

A Wiekamp kill early in the third set broke a 3-3 tie and started an 8-2 Manhattan spurt that gave the Jaspers a 12-5 cushion.  Stony Brook pulled within four at 17-13 before a Kitlar kill ignited a four-point rally that made it 21-13.  The Seawolves scored the next six points to trim the margin to two, 21-19, but it would get no closer, and Manhattan held on to take the set, 25-20, and finish off a straight-sets victory.

Wiekamp tallied a team-high 11 kills.  Kitlar added nine kills on .364 hitting to go along with three blocks, and Behrens registered four blocks.  Jade Gray (Boise, Idaho) had a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs, while Teodora Peric (Chicago, Ill.) distributed a team-best 18 assists.  Yamashiro registered a match-best 18 digs, as the Jaspers outdug the Seawolves 50-41.  As a team, Manhattan hit .261 (44 kills, 15 errors, 111 attempts) in the match.

Shelby Tietjen and Kaitlin Costello each had 12 kills to lead the Seawolves.  Hannah Dolan handed out 37 assists, while Laura Hathaway contributed 17 digs.  Stony Brook hit .161 (44-24-124) as a team.

Against Holy Cross, the Jaspers got off to a hot start, quickly building a 10-3 lead in the first set.  Holy Cross gradually chipped away, though, eventually taking a 19-17 advantage of its own.  With the Crusaders leading 20-18, a kill by Erin Weis (Omaha, Neb.), followed by two from Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) put Manhattan back in front, 21-20.  Holy Cross reached set point at 24-23, but the Jaspers responded with three straight points of their own to capture the frame, 26-24.  Manhattan's offense hit a solid .316 (18-6-38) in the first set.

After Manhattan went up 2-1 in the second set, Holy Cross rallied for seven straight points and 14 of the next 16 to open up a 15-4 advantage.  The Jaspers cut the deficit to 16-8, but the Crusaders responded with a 7-3 run to increase their cushion to 23-10.  Holy Cross hit .394 (17-4-33) in the set, which it won by a 25-13 count, to even the match at 1-1.

In the third set, Holy Cross jumped out to a 7-3 advantage before a 5-0 Manhattan run, capped by a Wiekamp block, put the Jaspers in front 8-7.  However, the Crusaders countered with a 6-2 spurt to regain the lead, 13-10, before Manhattan pulled within one at 15-14.  Holy Cross again responded, though, scoring eight of the next 11 points to increase the margin to six, 23-17.  Manhattan used a 4-0 run to get back within two, 23-21, but the Crusaders took the next two points to finish off a 25-21 set win.

The fourth set was tight early on, as the sides traded the first 10 points of the frame.  Manhattan got a kill from Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii) and a Weis ace to take a 12-10 lead, but Holy Cross won seven of the next 10 points to go in front 17-15.  After the Crusaders extended their advantage to 22-17, the Jaspers pulled back within three at 23-20 on Weis' second ace of the set.  However, Holy Cross held on to take the set, 25-21, and wrap up a 3-1 match victory.

Volovski led Manhattan with 15 kills on an impressive .364 hitting.  Peric handed out 27 assists, while Gray had her second double-double of the day with 13 assists and 11 digs.  Yamashiro contributed a team-high 15 digs for the Jaspers, who hit .177 (43-20-130).

Natalie Welsch and Mandy Sifferlen smashed 16 kills apiece for the Crusaders, while Sifferlen also had 10 digs to complete a double-double.  Katie McKernan recorded 14 kills on .636 hitting to go along with 38 assists and eight digs.  Emily Popp tallied 23 digs, and Hannah Grace Stokes added nine digs and three aces.  Holy Cross hit a stellar .336 (62-17-134) as a team and outdug Manhattan 60-41.

The Jaspers play their 2013 home opener on Wednesday night, when St. Francis (NY) (1-0) visits Draddy Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. matchup.  Manhattan posted a 3-0 victory over the Terriers in Brooklyn last season.
