RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Four Jaspers scored in double figures, paced by a career-high 15 points by Tyler Wilson, as Manhattan overcame a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Monmouth 75-66 at Draddy Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The win is the third straight for the Jaspers, who improve their MAAC record to 2-0.
Monmouth limited Manhattan to 30.8 percent shooting from the field in the first half and sank five three-pointers at the same time to grab hold of a 39-33 lead at halftime.
The Jaspers began the second half with renewed vigor, outscoring the Hawks 25-9 over the first 11 minutes of the second half, capped by a driving layup by Tyler Wilson that forced a Monmouth timeout.
Manhattan led 58-48 at the nine-minute mark and pushed its advantage to 16 points, 70-54, when Donovan Kates found RaShawn Stores for an open triple with 3:27 left to go. That basket punctuated a second-half shooting effort in which Manhattan made 53.6 percent of its field goals and held Monmouth to just six made baskets in the half.
"At halftime we had to reestablish our principles," senior Rhamel Brown said after the game. "We had to get back to playing defense, playing together as one unit."
Wilson's 15 points came on six of seven from the field. Emmy Andujar added 13 points and six rebounds in 17 minutes, while George Beamon had 11 points and six rebounds. Brown finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight blocked shots.
Deon Jones and Max DiLeo each had 14 points for Monmouth.
Currently 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC, the Jaspers are back in action on Sunday, December 15 at UNC Wilmington in Wilmington, North Carolina. Game time is 2 p.m.
