Swimming Toppled by Iona

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Heading into the final event of the meet, the Manhattan men's swim team was in a tight battle with Iona. However, the Gaels won 14 of a possible 17 points in the 200 freestyle relay to win the meet by a score of 137-125. The Jasper women also fell to their conference rival, 173-89.

Things began strongly for the men (1-1) when Lance Neuendorf led off the 200 medley relay, sparking a Jasper win in the first event. He, along with Mike Mackay, Christopher Reyes, and Ryan Klages combined for a time of 1:38.07 seconds. Neuendorf's impressive day continued in the 100 backstroke as he won that event with a time of 53.49 seconds. He also placed first in the 200 back (1:56.68 seconds) and the 200 Individual Medley (2:01.88 seconds).

In the men's 100 breaststroke, Dennis Daly and Mackay finished first and second respectively, keeping Manhattan in strong contention for the victory. The two would perform the same feat in the 200 breast, with Mackay just edging out Daly. Klages also earned an individual win the 50 freestyle, touching the wall in 22.62 seconds. Heading into the final event, the Jaspers trailed 123-122, but Iona took first and second in the 200 freestyle relay giving them the win.

The rookie anchored the 200 medley relay, finished with a split of 25.89 seconds, to give the Jaspers a second place finish in the event. She rounded out the group of Madison Brown, Vanessa L'Heureux and Kerry Schuermann. Colton would then go on to win the 100 free with a of 56.41 seconds, while also placing second in the 50 free.

Schuermann also had a strong performance for Manhattan, placing second in both the 100 back and the 200 IM. In the two distance events, Brown finished second in the 500 free while Sara Buckley did the same in the 1000.

Both Neuendorf and Colton were named performers of the meet by the Manhattan coaching staff following their efforts. The two teams will return to action on Fri., Nov. 8 when they travel to Baruch for their first road competition of the season.
