WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite 27 points and nine rebounds from Monica Roeder (Marlton, N.J.), the Manhattan College women's basketball team (1-2) dropped a 66-52 decision to Army (3-1) at Christl Arena on Wednesday night.
Roeder's 27 points represented the second-highest scoring output of her career, behind only a 35-point effort against East Tennessee State on Nov. 19, 2011. Her nine rebounds equaled a game-high, as she just missed her first career double-double.
Army got out quickly, taking a 9-2 lead less than four minutes into the game. However, the Jaspers countered with an 8-0 rally. Roeder scored five straight points, then Nicole Isaacs (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit a trey to put Manhattan in front 10-9 with 13:38 left in the first half. The Black Knights responded, though, going on a 9-0 run of their own to open up an eight-point advantage, 18-10, with 9:10 remaining before halftime.
After a Roeder layup made it a five-point game, 27-22, with 1:31 to go, Army outscored Manhattan 7-1 over the remainder of the half to take a 34-23 lead into the locker room.
The Black Knights upped their advantage to 14 points early in the second half before a Roeder layup and an Isaacs trey that just beat the shot clock brought Manhattan back within nine, 41-32, with 15:23 to play. It was still a nine-point game, 44-35, at the 10:13 mark when a Kelsey Minato trey ignited a 21-6 Army run that extended the Black Knights' lead to a game-high 24 points, 65-41, with 2:54 left.
Manhattan ended the game on an 11-1 run. After Roeder scored the first five points of the spurt, Katie Reese (Boonton Township, N.J.) hit a three from right in front of the Jaspers' bench before Roeder capped the scoring with her fifth three-pointer of the night. That trey cut Manhattan's final deficit to 14 points, 66-52.
Roeder was the only Jasper to reach double-figures in the scoring column. Isaacs tallied nine points on three treys, while Allison Skrec (Roselle, N.J.) handed out seven assists. Manhattan shot 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the field, 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from three-point land, and 50 percent (4-of-8) at the charity stripe.
Jen Hazlett finished with 18 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Black Knights. Minato added 14 points and four assists, while Jean Parker tallied 13 points, six boards and three assists off the bench. Aimee Oertner contributed eight points and seven rebounds, and Olivia Schretzman grabbed nine caroms, as Army outrebounded Manhattan 46-30. The Black Knights shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field, including 32 percent (8-of-25) from long range, but went just 4-for-10 (40 percent) at the line.
After starting the season with three straight road games, the Jaspers will finally open their home schedule on Sunday afternoon. La Salle (0-2) visits Draddy Gymnasium for a 2 p.m. matchup that marks the beginning of a three-game homestand for Manhattan.
