LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - A day after a 1-0 win over Quinnipiac, tenth-seeded Manhattan played second-seeded Fairfield even for 110 minutes of scoreless on soccer on Friday afternoon. Penalty kicks ended up deciding the winner as Fairfield topped Manhattan 4-2 in the shootout to advance to the MAAC Women's Soccer semifinals on Sunday afternoon.
Neither team had a number of solid chances in the first half, although Manhattan goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny made three saves to keep the game scoreless. In the second half, Fairfield continued to apply pressure, forcing Skonieczny to stop four more shots on goal in the frame. Nikki Stanton had the best chance in the 74th minute, when her shot clanged off the crossbar and out of harm's way.
The two defenses continued to control the game in each 10-minute overtime period, forcing the match in penalty kicks.
Manhattan's first two kicks were unable to find the back of the net, while Fairfield scored on both of their shots to take a 2-0 edge. Aislinn McIlvenny then put the Jaspers on the board and Kaelyn Angelo's shot made it 3-2 with Fairfield looking to clinch. Pam Coufos then slotted her shot into the back of the net to seal the victory for Fairfield as the Stags advance to the semifinals to play sixth-seeded Siena.
Skonieczny made seven saves in the match and did not allow a goal in 200 minutes during the Jaspers' run in the tournament.
Manhattan concludes its season with a 6-12-2 record. Fairfield moves into Sunday's semifinal match with a record of 11-6-2.
