RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Kaelyn Angelo and Shannon Barry each tallied their first career goals early in the first half to help lift Manhattan to a 2-1 victory over Canisius on Breast Cancer Awareness Day on Saturday at Gaelic Park.
Despite missing four starters due to injury, Manhattan began the first half with a flourish. In the eighth minute, Aislinn McIlvenny made a run down the right side, made one touch to her left and fired a beautiful ball to the far post. On the receiving end was Kaelyn Angelo, who one-timed the ball into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal, giving the Jaspers a 1-0 advantage.
Ten minutes later, Manhattan earned its first corner kick of the match. Sam Washuk took the kick and curved a ball directly into the box and directly to head of Shannon Barry, who knocked it past Cansius goalkeeper Megan Tock for her first collegiate goal, which gave Manhattan a 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, senior goalkeeper Maria Sanzari made three saves during the first half and was solid in goal all day to maintain the Manhattan lead.
Canisius cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 70th minute when Maria Nelms scored her first goal of the season, an unassisted tally from 25 yards out that deflected off the bottom of the crossbar and past the goal line.
The Jaspers kept in attacking mode the rest of the way, forcing Tock to make three additional saves in the final 20 minutes. Sanzari was equal to the task in goal for the Jaspers, stopping Nelms on the doorstep with five minutes left. That save helped seal the win for Manhattan, its first in MAAC play.
Now 4-8-1 and 1-3-1 in the MAAC, the Jaspers will return to action at Fairfield on Wednesday, October 9 at 7 p.m.
