RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Rider's Tara Ballay scored twice, including the game-winner with 3:36 left in the second overtime to lift the Broncs to a 2-1 victory over Manhattan on Saturday afternoon at Gaelic Park.
The Jsapers struck first, 10 minutes into the match. With Manhattan controlling the early pace of play, Janie Schlauder found herself alone in space deep in the Rider end. Schlauder made a terrific touch toward the middle of the field and fired a hard, low shot into the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Rider answered later in the half. In the 29th minute, Jody Sokol sent an accurate cross into the box that Ballay got a head on to even the match at 1-1.
After the second half passed with no score, the teams headed into the first overtime deadlocked at 1-1.
The Jaspers had two strong chances in the first overtime, the first of which came when Aislinn McIlvenny made a run into the box, had her shot blocked by a defender, then Erica Modena fired one on goal that Rider goalkeeper Vanessa Perdomo saved.
Perdomo also denied Emily Ude's run down the left side later in the first overtime with the clock winding down, helping preserve the 1-1 tie.
"I thought we played well and fought hard," head coach Brendan Lawler said after the match. "They just took one more chance than we did."
Manhattan returns to action on Wednesday, October 23 at Quinnipiac for a 2 p.m. match.
NOTES:
Rider improved to 7-7 and 4-4 in the MAAC ... the Jaspers are 2-5-1 in the conference ... Colleen Kavanagh saw her first action of the season after a preseason injury ... youth programs from Monroe-Woodbury and Riverdale accompanied the Jaspers for the introduction of starting lineups before the match.
