RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Daniel Stewart and Anthony Myles went for double-doubles to lift Rider (8-9, 3-2) past Manhattan 69-60 on Thursday at Draddy Gymnasium. Jaspers' junior forward Rhamel Brown also posted a double-double scoring all 15 of his points in the second half to go along with 11 rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Manhattan freshman forward Shane Richards matched a career-high with 18 points on six three-pointers in the setback playing without injured All-MAAC guards George Beamon and Michael Alvarado.
Stewart had his double-double by the end of the first half as he finished with a game-high 22 points and 16 rebounds. He shot 7-for-11 from the field. Myles added 13 points and 14 rebounds helping Rider win its second straight game.
Manhattan (4-11, 2-3) trailed 28-20 at intermission in a choppy first half. The Jaspers got into early foul trouble resulting in Brown seeing only six minutes of action in the stanza. Richards picked the team up shooting 3-for-6 beyond the arc leading Manhattan into the locker room with nine points.
Freshman point guard CJ Jones gave Manhattan solid minutes off the bench as he scored eight of his career-high 11 points in the second half. Jones handed out three assists and grabbed four rebounds.
The Jaspers rallied back from a 10-point deficit in the second half, pulling within one point with 4:31 remaining after a 14-5 run. Brown and Jones each scored four points during the four minute spurt, while sophomore forward Emmy Andujar and Richards knocked down key three-pointers. Jones hit the first shot of a pair of free-throws to make it a 54-53 ballgame, but after missing the second shot Stewart answered with a three-point play.
Stewart scored his fifth straight point with a layup at 3:42 that put Rider in front 59-53. Broncs' senior guard Jonathon Thompson sealed the victory hitting 5-of-6 free-throw attempts in the last two minutes to hold off the undermanned Jaspers.
Rider outrebounded Manhattan 48-32 and hit 24-of-36 free-throw attempts. The Jaspers went 9-for-19 at the line, while shooting 36.8% (21-57) from the field.
Manhattan looks to bounce back Sunday when it hosts Marist at 2 p.m. Prior to the contest at 11 a.m., Manhattan will hold an Alumni Game featuring over 30 former Jaspers. The Alumni Game is open to the public.
