SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Manhattan men's soccer team was unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit on the road as they fell 2-1 to the Bryant Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon. The Jaspers (0-6-1) were outshot 11-7 in the loss which came in their sixth straight road contest.
Bryant (2-2-1) struggled to keep up with the pace of Manhattan in the first half, as they were able to control possession and tempo at the start of the contest. In the 43rd minute the Bulldogs would get on the board when Jasper goalkeeper George Ellis came out of the box to defend a long throw-in. Ellis would deflect the ball into the box and Angelo Caputi was able to corral the loose ball and put a shot into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Coming out of the halftime break, Bryant immediately looked to extend their advantage getting the first three shots of the frame off. They would break through again in the 60th minute as Connor Norat headed a ball to the top of the box that Anthony Zarella deposited into the near post pushing the lead to 2-0 Bulldogs.
Over the final 30 minutes of the game, Manhattan fought to get on the board with multiple scoring chances. Erick Montinard put a header on net off a corner kick from Tommy Amos in the 67th minute but Bryant keeper Chris Knaub was able to make a save.
After more attempts at a goal, Amos was able to help the Jaspers avoid a shutout when he took a feed from Naru Park and beat Knaub to cut the deficit in half. Mere moments later, Kevan Lewis put a corner kick in play as time wound down but Manhattan was unable to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Ellis finished the game with one save while Knaub deflected two shots on goal. The Jaspers are back in action on Fri. Sept., 28 when they travel to cross-borough rival Fordham in the annual "Battle of the Bronx".
